The Church Hill Reunion 2009 will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2009 at George Mason Playground-Ethel Bailey Furman Field.
Ugh… can’t say I’m a fan of this event. Last year’s event ended with a impromptu street party on our block involving no one from our block. It ended when the cops drove by hours later and asked them to move along. Once the cops left a couple of *f you* gunshots were fired into the air and then they left.
Isw this the event where whites are basically not welcome?
In the interest of not having Drew piss all over this thread: we’ve been here before.
And also, your date is off. Saturday is the 12th.
Good catch. I’ve written back to the person that submitted the event to get confirmation, but it is more than likely Saturday the 12th, not Friday the 11th.
I’m glad to hear there is a Church Hill Reunion and hope that someone is going to talk to the organizers about your clean-up concerns. I live across from Chimborazo Park and know that I will not have parking and will have to “host” others when festivals occur at the park…I look at it as part of city living.
Drew – Do you think those who looked at me at the Irish Festival were telling me I wasn’t welcomed? I’m not Irish and I’m black so I guess I shouldn’t have had as much fun as I did. Thanks for enlightening me.

In the meantime, a few years back, the week I moved into Church Hill, I was told about this event which was a few blocks from my new house. I decided to go….BIG MISTAKE. I was told in no uncertain terms that I was unwelcome. Furthermore, the lack of cleanup was appalling, as my dogs visit to the playground the following day resulted in a trip to the Emergency Vet as chicken wings were left all over the ground.
Yes, CDS, the Irish Festival is a lot more…civil, shall we say, than the Church Hill Reunion. John Murden doesn’t have the sack to say it, but I do. Guess that ranking in Style Weekly has gone to his head….
It was not intended to go unnoticed. My remark was intended to derail your racist tirade, but it seems to have failed.
Two years ago you made this complaint. The next 3 commenters, apparently white, said that they felt welcomed at the Church Hill Reunion, refuting your assertion that this was a blacks only event ([1], [2], [3]). To come back after that and write that “this the event where whites are basically not welcome” reads as you trying to stir up racial tension.
The lack of clean up seems to be a different issue, separate from whether or not you as a white dude feel appropriately welcomed at the event.

Who’s being inflammatory now? Suddenly I’m a full-fleged racist? You don’t know me. Please don’t make that assumption.
I can only go by my experience of two years ago. NO parking, INSANELY LOUD, bass-heavy music (with offensive lyrics I should add), and the worst clean up of any public event I’ve ever seen (which, as I said, resulted in my dog nearly choking to death)
Sure, the other festivals present their unique challenges to the neighborhood, but nothing approaching the Reunion event.
As for the “racial component”….I’m sorry John…I live in a world where we are all equal, however I recognize that our various cultures differ in many ways. As soon as we accept that reality, then perhaps we can bridge the differences that divide us. Basically, when we can be HONEST about our feelings and experiences, only then can a REAL discussion begin. Your blog should be a place to do that, and I commend you for the work that you do, however, surely you can’t be blind to the very real problems that plague the neighborhood we all share and love.
Living in Church Hill has been an eye-opening experience for me. A mostly positive one to be sure, but trust me, I’ve also been witness to and the recipient of, some pretty bad actions and words from folks of another color.
Take from that what you will. I just refuse to be unprepared again. My safety and well-being MATTER to me.
I used to live in Church Hill many, many years ago. I really liked living in Church Hill. I attend the Church Hill reunion each year. I really enjoy getting to see people I have not seen in years, some of them still live in Church Hill. This event has been going on for years. Now it seems that since in the past few years, that the newer resident’s have been complaining about this event. I have seen white people at this event and they seemed to be enjoying it. It’s not about white or
black,anymore, we have biracial people and people of all nationalities living among us. They like all types of music. I don’t like the races, but it don’t bother me that people go there to drink and have a good time. There is a lot of other events that we have, which involves loud music, drinking and they are held in somebody’s neighborhood. If we keep making it a racial issue, how do you expect our kids to not be a racists. If clean up is a problem, then lets try to correct it, but it seems to me, some people just don’t want it to happen period, so they are going to find something to complain about.
I feel like there are a lot of racial comments made on here. People of all cultures tend to have a couple of people who don’t know how to act in public. It’s not what color you are but WHO you are. Maybe we need to work on raising our kids correctly so that they won’t be as racist as some of the people comments I’m reading on here.
