Resurrecting history at Evergreen Cemetery
03/03/2010 6:20 AM by John M
Phil Riggan recently toured Evergreen, spent a day working to clear a grave site, and comes away spreading the word of involvement:
We picked a plot that had a suspected path next to it and by the end of the day the group had cleared two and a half plots and uncovered the path. Envisioning a goal and attacking it. Plus, the conversation was uplifting and positive — a great environment for giving your time for a good cause.
Clearing the cemetery will take years, and the small core of volunteers needs your help. Rally your friends and family and give three hours of your time one Saturday morning. Get a troop together.
Thank you John M for sharing my blog posts. I was moved by my first experience seeing Evergreen Cemetery and would love to think there are enough caring people that one day it could be restored (and then maintained, of course).
Rev. McQuinn was the first person to take on this initiative years ago. They did a dam good job. The problem is finding funds to maintain it.
Alicia – With all due respect for what I have seen Ms.McQuinn accomplish in other areas, I have to say that I haven’t heard or seen anything from her in regard to Evergreen other than quotes in newspaper articles. If this is on her agenda, she has been very quiet about it. McQuinn has been in a prime governmental position to bring attention and funding to Evergreen for quite some time, yet the *only* folks really keeping this alive are a core of dedicated weekend volunteers.
With all due respect you must be new to the area. Rev McQuinn organized over 150 persons to help with this effort including inmates and Franklin Military Academy along with other High Schools. Give the lady her due respect.Again, do your research. As a matter of fact I was out there in helping to clean off Maggie Walkers grave. Do your research. Do your research.Do your research.
That sounds nice, but temporary. Given her position as a community leader she has had the potential to work for a lasting solution to the Evergreen problem, but hasn’t (as far as I can tell) done so. What larger efforts am I missing?
Well you seem to have a problem with Mrs. McQuinn and I don’t. As far as I am concerned Mrs. McQuinn has been instrumental in helping assist with the transformation of the East End and everybody knows it whether you know it or don’t know it.You haven’t been here 10 years yet. Get some years up under your belt and then we can debate. All of my children respect the ground she walks on because she took time to help them when nobody else cared. She helped with that graveyard several times and she was out there assisting with the efforts and getting her hands dirty(removing grass, weeds, thorns, snakes, dead animals bones).I was out there 2 days straight. And it should not just be her responsibility, its everybody responsibility to assist. So just because you personally have friends out there helping don’t forget those who did the major work because it was terrible years ago compared to now.You think it looks bad now, you should have seen it years ago.You need to broaden your mind, and i thought you were more intelligent then that.Wow, I was wrong. And now I am signing off John Murden!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me approach this as a bureaucrat might. Isn’t Evergreen privately owned? Where is the nexus of spending public dollars to improve a private business? Shouldn’t the property owners be required to maintain the property? Private volunteer efforts are entirely appropriate, but that is different that Rev. McQuinn, or any other member of council, appropriating public dollars to the effort.
For the record, I’m not the one that brought McQuinn into this.
I’m saying that, obviously, no one has found a long term solution to the issues at Evergreen. None of the East End political or community leaders have maintained an out-front position on Evergreen: the only ongoing activity at the cemetery is due to a dedicated band of volunteers (none of whom I actually know very well).
Community leaders, be they ministers, politicians, or whatever, could be doing a lot more towards raising regular volunteers or funds to help in the reclamation process.
Personally no one said anybody should spend public dollars at a gravesite. But what the hell, they are trying to spend public dollars on charter schools.McQuinn isn’t on council. She organized volunteers to help with this effort years ago.
Alicia,
It’s not an election year for McQuinn so you can stop campaigning for her. She does nothing that doesn’t help her in the long run so what she did do at Evergreen was done for some other reason than for just the good of the site.
What’s really wrong with this city is that people like you put people like McQuinn on pedestals like they are Gods or something. Your children respect the ground she walks ok? Please… obviously your children are either very young or very unaware of what’s going on around them.
SEW grow up and get a life. Something that you don’t have. Are you angry with life because you are miserable. Put down the bottle.I don’t have to campaign for her because the voters continue to do what is right. She has done an awesome job and will continue. As long as you throw darts, she will get stronger. remember that jack…!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And while you are at it, if you can continue to keep crying , what is the baby going to do?Jerk like you have no life and will never have a life. As a matter of fact , stay miserable the rest of your life in your own world. You are probably bi-polar or depressed or you’ve had family issues when you were growing up…..
jerk jerk jerk jerk jerk ………….
LoL @ all the aggression. Relax alicia, it’s just the internet…

Typical…your rant there just speaks volumes!
Nice James!
Alicia, I have to agree with SEW, if McQuinn did anything at Evergreen it was to benefit her in some way.
I’m sure you will attack me too but let me add, I’ve lived up here for over 25 years and have absolutely no recollection of McQuinn doing anything at Evergreen (nor Leonidas Young, nor Henry Marsh, nor even Walter Kenney back in the day).
If she did so, she didn’t ask for volunteers in a very public way, or I would have heard about it as I got phone calls and/or notices when she held other meetings.
Now, since she’s not running for office right now, I also agree with SEW that you can quit campaigning for her. Since the topic here is Evergreen, & volunteers cleaning it up, why don’t you organize a group of people on a Saturday morning and help out, instead of attacking neighbors? Use your energy in a positive way.
By the way, your attacks do not give credibility either to you or to McQuinn. So far as I’m concerned, you reflect very negatively on McQuinn as one of her supporters. Anyone who posts on a blog for all to see calling neighbors ‘jerk’ needs to remember that this blog is read by a lot of people. Think about how that looks for the next time McQ. actually is running for office….that her supporters call others ‘jerk’ doesn’t sound positive for her.
If McQuinn did such a good job, why does evergreen look like a complete dump? Has anyone gotten the USA Today dispenser out yet? or the tons of baby diapers and tires?
Don’t undermine the volunteers NOW just because someone once volunteered, years ago.
With that being said, it’s still my favorite graveyard in the city. Hands down.
Well to crd and shawn and sew it looks good to say what the hell I want to say. This site is not read by alot of people. 90% of the district dont have computers. You all are a bunch of racist pigs that sit AT HOME AND DRAIN THE BOTTLE ALL DAY LONG.AND I WILL CALL YOU A JERK AGAIN.JERK JERK JERK. AS A SUPPRTER OR NON SUPPORTER I SAY WHAT THE HELL I WANT TO SAY. LETS LOOK AT THE LIES AND UGLY COMMENTS YOU HAVE MADE IN THE PAST.
CRD YOU ARE ANOTHER PERSON. YOU HAVE NO LIFE.PUT DOWN THE BOTTLE.
OH AND ANOTHER THING, DON’T GET MAD WITH ME BECAUSE YOU ARE ALWAYS INTOXICATED.GO GET SOME HELP………….
Well said crd.
Why is alicia always slandering intoxicated people? We have rights too!
Wow. Back to Evergreen.
Great place. To the folks who have volunteered there, thanks. To the folks who will in the future, thanks too.
Too bad it got so out of hand to begin with, and I really appreciate those who are in the solution with the reclaiming of the area.
Couldn’t the current volunteers, the relevant politicians and local church leaders, with the consent or in partnership with the current owners of Evergreen (whoever they are), all establish a formal non-profit to accept donations and organize a regular maintenance schedule?
Signed a (sober) neighbor.
What is the schedular this spring to work on Evergreen?
Hummm, funny how Alicia knows so much about everyone else on here. That’s right…she doesn’t. She just spouts random insults to all who disagree with her. Either she’s related to McQuinn or perhaps McQuinn is paying her for her support. It really makes no difference. I, for one Alicia, am currently at work…yes, I have a job and I’m not on the bottle at the present moment. And Alicia, help me to understand… if we don’t care for or agree with McQuinn , we’re automatically racist? That’s really logical thinking…y ou’re all over the place. Perhaps you’ve crawled all up in the bottle today…
Sew I must have hit a nerve. No I am not related to her and I dont have to receive any money from McQuinn. I make $80,000 a year plus benefits.I am also white and McQuinn looks black to me.So again you are still a jerk alky.
And by the way, I live in the 2700 block of Grace st. You figure it out.
http://www.pennycemeteryfund.org/donate.html
I live on the 2400 block of Grace, alicia. That really means nothing in Richmond. The amount I paid for a nice house here would barely get me a 1000 sqft condo in Chicago. Housing market is down and Church Hill is still far from being the ideal neighborhood to raise a family. Lets not start bragging about wealth to try and justify our internet arguments. I think you need to be polite to your neighbors. Also, lets leave alcohol out of this thread. It is about the weakest insult I have ever seen on the internet. Play nice… back on topic.
eds, thanks for the link!
Alicia, so back in post #6 you stated that McQuinn removed “dead animals bones” from Evergreen cemetery. How do you know they were animal bones?
Bones bring any project, be it clean up or construction, to a complete halt and need to be reported to the authorities.
For all we know, if you are telling the truth, and McQuinn was really there “getting her hands dirty(removing grass, weeds, thorns, snakes, dead animals bones” – then McQuinn and/or you may have removed human remains from that cemetery.
And please don’t tell me that you are qualified to identify the difference between human and animal bones – unless you’re also going to tell me that you’re a forensic anthropologist!
I think this is a troll, and y’all are taking the bait.
I look forward to participating in one of the cleanup days at Evergreen as my schedule allows.
The regular volunteers are out almost every Saturday, down at the growing space off of Richmond Road.
Sign up to the Yahoo group or follow’em on twitter to find out when they’ll be out working.
For the record, I have never drank a beer or tasted an alcoholic beverage. Of all the things to call me, a drunk is probably the furthest thing from the truth. You talk to us about doing research…
Shame on you Alicia!
#33 Juliellen, I’m sure she (or he) is a troll. She (or he) has provided me with a great deal of entertainment today, though! Add to that the fact that this thread has gotten so much attention, and maybe it will bring more volunteers out to Evergreen, too.
#36 crd, good point about the publicity. And we all need a little snickering now and then.
I’m kind of looking forward to today’s entertainment from Alicia. She does have quite a way with words doesn’t she?
Oh, and crd, good point in post 32! But I’m sure Alicia is probably a forensic anthropologist…that’s how she makes $80k a year and lives in the 2700 block of Grace! Notice she didn’t say East Grace…
alkyssssssssssssssssssssss
There will be a group of volunteers working most of the day on Saturday, 3/20, at Evergreen. We will be working at the south entrance on East Richmond Road starting at 9:00 a.m. Come join us.

I’m a little late on the action here but I would love to help. I run a website with a small following of locals about the history of Richmond. I would like to come down and take a few photos of what’s going on down there and write up a piece on on the wonderful work you guys are doing. Who knows? you might get some more hands willing to get dirty out of it.
