En Plein Air Day at Libby Hill Park
The Historic Richmond Foundation is calling passionate amateurs, seasoned artists, children, friends and visitors to enjoy a day in the park at Libby Hill Park making art on Saturday, September 10 from 10AM-6PM.
In 1733, as he stood on what is now Libby Hill Terrace, William Byrd, II was struck by the resemblance of the bend in the river to that of the river in Richmond-on-Thames, England. Byrd named his new city Richmond. We hope to preserve the view which has remained virtually unchanged for over 275 years, through the artists’ creative vision.
Come see and paint THE VIEW overlooking the James River where Richmond got its name. Calling passionate amateurs, seasoned artists, children, friends and visitors to enjoy a day in the park making art. Sponsored by the Historic Richmond Foundation.
The address is 2801 E. Franklin St., Richmond. We have reserved the park from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and will have plenty of bottled water, snacks and lemonade for participants and visitors.
What fun to gather, paint together, see other artist’s work, picnic and enjoy the view that named Richmond!

This will be a fabulous event! Can’t wait!
This sounds like a fun idea to celebrate probably the best viewpoint in the city.
The weather was perfect and to see so many looking at the view that named Richmond was grand. Having so many children enjoying Libby Park was a joy.
I walked around and looked at the work. There were some interesting paintings and some very interpretive styles.
I’m not sure the “virtually unchanged” is totally correct. Maybe in geologic terms, but certainly not in the man-made world we live in.
“unchanged” as in there is not a gigantic building blocking the panoramic view being celebrated. i would encourage everyone to get out Wednesday evening to support planned development of the riverfront that preserves the view of the river for which the city was named for all resident.
