East End Theater (by David Rohrer)
11/11/2014 7:17 AM by John M
Kirsten at Schindler Gallery shared out this great painting of the East End Theater and 25th Street Post Office by David Rohrer in advance of his upcoming show.
Does anyone have a photo of the East End Theater from the 1950’s or 60’s?
@Harold, I am sorry to be late responding but unfortunately, unless someone has old photos in family archives of the building possibly from former owners or managers, they will be scarce to non-existent. Is there a reason why you would like one showing it in those years? It was built in the 1930s. What I have encountered over the years of research is that anything North of Broad (NOB) has avoid concerning photos and written history. Mainly due to segregation issues. And by this time the building had already fallen into disrepair.
I may have one of it from the 1957 tax card showing it but may only be the lower half of the building? They are small so a bit grainy.
BTW, the light color front going up now with brick sides on the building is correct from 1936. Unfortunately the marquee designed to go up is not the original shape but at least there will be one along with the old neon vertical sign. It is starting to look good and dressing up the neighborhood.

I had heard from Josh Bilder and he said that there are tenants already in the theater apartments and there is a delay with the marquee. I had provided him with photos and background that shows that the marquee design was different than what his architect pans shows so, they had to redesign it. It and the blade theater name sign should be up by October.
