2 recent robberies

Today’s issue of Noteworthy Events from the Richmond Police Department has 2 incidents in the First Precinct that really stand out:
1st ROBBERY
5/12/09 2:00 p.m.
Martin Luther King Bridge
A male reported he was assaulted and robbed by five unknown males.1st ROBBERY
5/12/09 9:20 p.m.
2000 block of Redd Street
A male reported he was assaulted and robbed by six unknown males.
Be extra-attentive on your walk home from school. Yikes.
Does a robbery on Redd Street really stand out?
And another one in Shockoe Bottom about 9:30 AM. An employee of Wild Wing was beaten. He’s apparently not seriously hurt.
The suspects are a group of 3 juvenile males wearing black clothing, including puffy, fur-lined hooded coats, and between 5 feet, 3 inches and 6 feet, 1 inch tall. That’s all the description available.
Robbery and assault? Could these be related? Is Church Hill next? If it is the same kids, probably so.
Time to polish up your weapon? Did these kids learn nothing from the one that died a couple of weeks ago? Good thing my concealed carry is valid for another year.
@Robert – Actually, yeah, a robbery anywhere in the area stands out. The crime map will usually only show one or two in a given 2 week period, with the occasional spurts of higher activity. While the robberies that do occur tend to be in the north/west areas of the area, they are usually described as a person being robbed by one or two people that they already know. I haven’t seen a report of robberies by large groups of unknown males.
Not only that, but the fact these are large groups of assailants, attacking in broad daylight, is disturbing.
Raise my taxes and get some more police on these streets NOW!
(and no more taking police resources off the beat in order to hold vigils for car thiefs).
Chief Norwood spoke to City Council last week regarding the possibility of having to lay off 85 officers. Now is the time to let the mayor know that safety in our city needs to be a top priority. When you stop and think about it, 85 officers is a lot for our RPD. And I agree with Bullwinkle – if I knew my taxes were going for more police, fire and EMS – I say raise away!
The City could save a lot of money by not allowing the officers to take cars home as far as Aylett, VA. If they live within an “X” mile radius, then they could continue to drive the cars home. Beyond that, they don’t drive a patrol car home. These cars probably cost $1/mile to operate.
For those that want their taxes raised, you could always send a check to your local government. It’s done almost “none of the time”. It’s not we don’t pay enough taxes. It’s waste and bloated bureaucracy.
There is an endless supply of these delinquents in Richmond. Catch these three…fine and dandy but there are three more in any of the projects waiting to take their place at any given time.
And a little more on the BW3 robbery. Note where they were headed. See them in our hood? Call 911.

Richmond police are asking for the public’s help in locating three suspects in yesterday’s armed robbery of a Shockoe Bottom restaurant.
The suspects fled on foot toward Church Hill following the 9:30 a.m. robbery of the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant at 1501 E. Cary St.
Police said one employee was beaten in the face and forced into a freezer with two others during the robbery.
Three men entered the closed business through an unlocked rear door, demanded money, assaulted the worker and then put all three in a freezer before leaving.
The suspects were described as wearing dark winter jackets, black jeans and black shoes and had their heads covered with masks and hoods.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.”
If RPD wants to issue cars to employees who live outside the city, there are plenty of parking spots at the city limits where those individuals can leave their personal cars during the workday, then get back in them to drive the sixty miles home. RPD administration should be ashamed of itself.
Chief Norwood: don’t waste our money, then threaten our safety to get more of it.
Just for some perspective: the take-home policy and the list of sworn and non-sworn opfficers was created during the Monroe Administration. Chief Norwood, who became Chief in November, inherited the plan. You might argue that he should have moved faster in correcting it, but that is being done now. The comment at City Council concerning lay-offs also neds to be considered in context. Police officers did not get a raise this year, as they have in years past. Some union groups and a couple of members of council raised the question with Norwod of whether he could give the raise, without an increase in his budget. His response was that funding the pay raise without adding money to the budget would force the lay-off of 83 people. He was neither asking for the additional money nor threatening lay-offs. He was responding to a hypothentical raised during the budget work session.
A broad daylight mass mugging/ assault scares the hell out of me & is very unusual. Anyone know any new info on these cases?
They arrested two people in the Buffalo Wild Wings robbery, and have warrants out for the third person. There’s a story in the Times Dispatch about it.

Forgot to add, apparently one of the robbers at Buffalo Wild Wings was a woman. I don’t know if that group of three was the same as the other robberies (MLK Bridge and Redd St.) or not, there’s no mention of it in the T-D story.
Thanks crd.
