There will be a special program on Maggie Walker at Evergreen Cemetery at 7:00 PM on July 15:

Richmond’s National Parks Offer Special Evening Programs on New Lands, Evergreen Cemetery

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site invite the public to experience 2017’s “History at Sunset” series of evening guided walks and programs highlighting new park lands and lesser-known stories. Park Rangers will explore several of the Richmond area battlefields and Evergreen Cemetery in this series of free evening programs starting at 7 pm every Saturday in July at the locations listed below. All programs are 90 minutes unless otherwise indicated.

· July 1 – Malvern Hill. Experience one of the Civil War’s best-preserved battlefields on this two-hour walk. Park Ranger Bert Dunkerly offers a detailed analysis of the command and decision-making strategies of Generals McClellan and Lee; visitors are invited to weigh in. Meet at the Malvern Hill battlefield (9175 Willis Church Road, Richmond).

· July 8 – Gaines’ Mill. Visitors have the opportunity to consider the Battle of Gaines’ Mill from both the Union and Confederate positions thanks to a newly-installed bridge across Boatswain’s Creek that accesses 300 acres where Confederate forces staged one of the largest offensives of the war. Join Park Ranger Randy Cleaver for a tour that also includes a dedication ceremony at the bridge (6283 Watt House Road, Mechanicsville).

· July 15 – Evergreen Cemetery. A day of commemoration that begins with the dedication of the Maggie Walker statue in downtown Richmond (10 am) and a celebration of her 153rd birthday at Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site (11 am-3 pm) concludes with Park Ranger Ajena Rogers reminiscing on Walker’s legacy at Evergreen Cemetery, one of Richmond’s earliest African-American burial grounds and the final resting place of Maggie L. Walker as well as other notable African Americans (50 Evergreen Road, Richmond).

· July 22 – Cold Harbor – Redoubt Fletcher. Park Historian Bob Krick takes visitors on the park’s first-ever public tour of the largest free-standing fort and surviving man-made position along the seven-mile Cold Harbor front (5379 Sandy Valley Road, Mechanicsville).

· July 29 – Tredegar Iron Works. Did you know that Tredegar Iron Works produced munitions during the Civil War, WWI and WWII? Park Ranger Mike Gorman reflects on the anniversary of America’s entry into WWI and Tredegar’s role in both World Wars (470 Tredegar Street, Richmond).
