From today til Thursday, July 27, free summer meals will be provided to all children free of charge ages 18 yrs and under at the following locations #WeAreRPS
RPS needs a bit of tutoring in Virginia Law: https://vacode.org/2016/1/2.1/2/1-204/
So why are tax payers paying for meals twice? First we pay for WIC and now this? Were is the money going?
Yeah let the children go hungry. Show em what a real community is like.
I did not say let them go hungry. I asked where did the WIC money go if it was not used to feed the children breakfast and lunch? A legitimate question I think.
I think it’s an extremely logical & legitimate question but one that will never be answered except, “It’s for the children…..”
I can say this – as a former teacher in the neighborhood, I saw many many many students who were hungry during the school year, and who were extremely glad to have the breakfast and lunch that were provided. For whatever reason, yes children were hungry.
Googling around, it looks like WIC provides somewhere around ir under $100/month, and is geared towards infants and pregnant women and new mothers. Not sure that WIC and the free lunches at school overlap much.
You may be thinking about the SNAP program, which provides food benefits on a more broad scale. One source says “On average, SNAP households currently receive about $255 a month. The average SNAP benefit per person is about $126 per month, which works out to about $1.40 per person per meal.”
There are large questions here – should there be a social safety net for folks who need it? If so, is this enough? Too much?
I’ve never had to make use of this kind of thing, but I’m glad it’s there. Could it be more efficient? Probably. Are there some folk who run game? Sure. Seems like a fairly small price to pay to live in a society that can offer this kind of basic assurance to those who need it most.
There but for the grace of God etc.
