City seeks ideas on affordable housing

Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority officials are asking seeking input on what citizens would like to see in affordable housing, the RTD reports.

The agency is trying to get set for big changes at the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Washington is cutting funds for subsidized housing, setting new rules for how government-owned housing projects are to be run, and shifting responsibility for social-services programs HUD has long funded.

“We’re going to change, we don’t have a choice,” said RRHA executive director Sheila Hill-Christian.

“We’ll have to look at affordable housing not as a city within a city and we’ll have to look at residents of public housing just as we do any other citizen,” she said.

What she doesn’t know yet is exactly what options the plan will suggest, although she thinks it may say there will be fewer people living in public housing.
