Commander John Keohane of 1st Precinct presented information about the new sector policing at the 7th District Town Hall Meeting today.

The greater Church Hill area is split between the 111th and 113th sectors, in the 1st Precinct. The 111th sector encompasses Church Hill, Church Hill North, Union Hill, Chimborazo, and the other neighborhoods on the east and south. The 113th sector encompasses Fairmount, Peter Paul, Woodville, and the other neighborhoods east to Creighton and north.

It was reported that sector 111 is in “pretty good shape”, having seen a 40% decrease in violent crime over the past year. The spokesman acknowledged that there are still pockets of open-air drug markets which attract violence and that property crime has recently risen a little.

Successes were reported from sector 113, with the police saying that there is still much to be done. One of the high points is a 40% reduction of car theft in Peter Paul and a 20% reduction in violent crime overall. Focus was brought to the ‘misdemeanor crew’ that was out picking up trash along the streets in the area today. Mention was made of a special attention on turning around problem spots in the area encompassed by 24th, R, 22nd, and U Streets.

Lt. Hamlet Hood, a life-long resident of Church Hill, spoke passionately of the force’s connection to the area and the need for citizens to stay involved in rebuilding the foundation of the neighborhood. Lt.Hood also promised special meetings for the 113th sector. No dates have been announced.
