Style Weekly has an article about Jumpin’ J’s Java. “Now, after 14 months, Jumpin J’s Java & General Store is the social nexus of this north Church Hill neighborhood, a landmark at the once-blighted intersection of Jefferson and Leigh streets.”

I am compelled to point out that our first post was about the opening of Jumpin’ J’s. I’m located a bit north of J’s; it has been very nice to have somewhere that I can walk to.
No offense, but this new Union Hill home owner would much rather stroll down to the 17.5 ethos cafe in the Bottom (and huff it back!). Acknowledging that there is no accounting for taste, J’s is sort of like your old Auntie’s coffee shop. (Stale bagels, weak coffee, bad music…) All frill and no chill. Although watching the fellas hanging in and around the pubbie subbies across Jefferson adds some urban authentique to the experience. That being said, I would like to reserve the right to patronize this establishment when I don’t feel like walking!
Uhh, yeah, above was a bit harsh of me (to say the least)…sorry, hadn’t had my coffee yet (ironically). I think a bigger issue raised in Style this week involves the undergoing renovation of the planned grill for 600 block of N 25th St. With the impending opening of the Nolde Bakery Condos and continued renovation and new home construction around here, this community needs to come together on a plan for associated retail/restaurant/entertainment development. More importantly, in consideration of the issues raised by the proposed 5 points grill owner regarding excessive red tape, how do we make it easier for entrepenuers to create businesses that serve the community in a responsible manner. If this is well worn territory for those of you who have been here a while, I apologize, I’m new here and it appears to be some impediments to commercial development in this area. This may be one of the points of departure with (dare I say it) the historic preservation policy ethic that dominates the discussion up here.
Yeah, as another newbie to the area I’m very interested in what Bob brought up. It would be great to help entrepenuers in the neighbourhood.
Oh, and I love Jumpin’ J’s!
Has anyone addressed city council with this issue? If the council doesn’t seem interested, I would think that the mayor might have an interest.
Coffee is expensive. Thats all.
While I certainly support all the independant coffeehouses and especially, 17.5, I am sorry that Bob had such a bad experience in mine. I have had stale bagels in my time, but we try never to serve them and personally I like world music. I would like to thank all for the support we receive everyday. And Bob, if this is not the place for you, no hard feelings. But we do give our best shot everyday and it’s easy to be hard….Best wishes….Je
Jumpin Jays is the best thing happening in Richmond!!! Especially on Sunday mornings with the GREAT music and ambiance. The crowd is the most diverse: young/older, black/white..Bob obviously is not appreciating something great!… finally a truly happening place in Richmond! Amy
I think Church Hill needs more retail/entertainment facilities. I am all for.
I’ll not dignify Bob’s comments with a response. Rather, I’ll simply say that as a resident of Church Hill since 1990 (with the exception of a brief haitus between 1997 and 2001) I think J’s is the best thing to happen up here since… well… since I don’t know when. Friends and I gather there for coffee every Thursday morning, I entertain business clients there reguIarly, I go there when I need a quiet place to think or when I’m looking for a relaxing time with friends of all ages in a non-smoking, not-deafening, tastebud-tempting atmosphere. Hopefully, they’ll soon have their ABC license to sell wine and beer, and that will make it all the more homey. If you’re anywhere on the East End of Richmond, a visit to J’s is well worth the drive.
There are a growing number of places in Church Hill for people to choose from. A coffee house that didn’t get a recent nod from ‘Style’ but that is probably known to coffee drinkers on the hill is Buzzy’s at 27th and Broad. I don’t drink the stuff but Buzzy’s is where all the coffee drinkers in my family head when they want good java. And Buzzy’s fresh-squeezed limeades and warm chocolate scones can’t be beat!
