A new book, Tomorrow’s Cities,
Tomorrow’s Suburbs
, by University of Virginia professors William H. Lucy and David L. Phillips, looks into the changing relationship between city and suburb and says that the long-time urban social and economic issues are moving into the older suburbs while being alleviated in the city due to a renewed interest in rebuilding and renovation. From the overview:

“Rearrangement of the income geography of cities and suburbs presents new opportunities and challenges for public policy makers. Alleviation of effects of concentrated poverty and depleted city government treasuries remain daunting challenges. But now, market forces may contribute to reducing these problems rather than compounding them.”
