800 block of North 24th Street before and after
In the past year, 4 new houses have been built in the 800 block of North 24th Street. This is amazing change, but still leaves 2 empty lots and 3 vacant houses.
The three new houses on the even side of the street are private construction and are almost completed. The still under construction house at 803 North 24th is being built by Better Housing Coalition and appears to be a better fit with the larger of the pre-existing houses.

The brick house to the far right is still standing and occupied, while all 5 of the other houses pictured are long gone.

I don’t know why they can’t build houses with the same architectural style as what’s in the area, or at least what was once there. Did these architects even go to school?
801 is nice but the others aren’t.
801 was drawn by Walter Parks Architect for Better Housing Coalition. They really are doing good work in the area. I don’t know anything about the other houses.
Better Housing Coalition? Does that mean low income? I know any homeowner is welcome but some are less likely to cause trouble or tolerate a less than desireable element than others. I was just asking.
I know that there are some restrictions for some of the BHC houses, but not all. Some are sold only to 1st-time homeowners (with some financial help), some are sold at market value. The people that I know that are in BHC houses are all working and productive members of the community.
BHC does mean “low income” but you do have to have a job. It’s a lot of work to qualify – they really give your financial situation a workout and make sure the buyers are “ready” to own a home. FYI – I think the cap for 1 person is about $38,000, so it’s not as low income as you might think.
I live in the house on the far right, the one that’s brick…not one of the new ones. I’m happy to see the new construction, but I agree, I wish they’d made a more conscientious effort to retain the look of the houses that preceded them. I know it would have involved a lot more planning/cooperation between builders (or the financial backing of one individual or company) but if would if they could have attached/adjoined the houses, it would have been a much closer representation of the original ones and would have given the them a lot more square footage.
Either way, I’m not one to complain about progress! Kudos to this site, I just stumbled across it yesterday. It’s great! Thank you.
Does the Union Hill Civic Association exist? What has it done for the community since January 2006
There was a UHCA meet& greet in March, I’m not sure when the next meeting is. Send an email to Kai at kai_sommer13@hotmail.com if you’d like to get on the Union Hill Civic Association email list.
But what is the UHCA doing to help revitalize the area? How many residents (owners and renters) belong to this organization?
Offhand, I’d guess that I saw between 25 and 40 different people at the 2 events that I’ve been to. For an organization that is just being renewed, they have a lot of energy. I met a lot of fairly new residents and good number of long-time residents as well. It seems like a good bunch of people.
Personally, I applaud the all of the new construction and I wish to say thank you to those responsible.
A year ago the 800 Block of 24th Street was nothing but a block of overgrown weeds and trash. These new houses are great improvements.
Our property values have increased and a great deal of momentum has been put into place for even more development and revitalization…the same can not be said for when it was only weeds and trash.
Thank you John. I just wanted to know.
If Nicole is worried about what the Union Hill Civic Association is doing, or hasn’t done, in its three minutes of existence, perhaps she should join it.
um, if you are going to be snarky, please sign your name 🙂
