shooting on 30th Street
04/24/2006 9:47 PM by John M
We’ve received reports of a shooting in the 500 block of North 30th Street. More info later? Anyone?

I didn’t get home until after 6 but there were still cops on the 500 block of N. 31st when I got home. Guess that explains why.
I was starting to get a little bit too comfortable in my new surroundings, until last nights shooting and a couple of other recent incidents on my block. Does anybody have information on the CAPS program? Does it still exist? Thank you
There were several of us on the 500 block of 32nd Street when it happened.
The location, according to the RTD was right by the Clay Street Market, a notorious hangout for drug dealers and place to buy 40s. Giant cigarette ads are plastered all over it — right next to the elementary school. There was a school bus right there with kids around it about 20 minutes before when I drove by. I’m not sure if kids were still around when the bullets started flying.
It seemed closer than 2 blocks away. We heard 1 shot … then 10 second later 3 or 4 more shots. I saw people on 31st Street scatter but couldn’t get a good view because they were just flashes of people I could see through the breezeway.
The police responded very quickly. They were there in about 1 minute. Right when the police car pulled up to the corner of 31st and Clay where the victim had ran to, there was another single shot. Not sure if police fired or if someone shot at them.
Dozens of gawkers crowded around soon after.
I can’t belive how brazen the shooting was — right in broad daylight with people around everywhere right in front of an elementary school.
This is at least the fourth shooting or murder within 2 blocks of our house in a year and a half.
Kristen – CAPS still exists, but they respond to property maintenance issues, not shootings. If a property maintence issue is creating an environment of crime, then they can address your issue.
Check the city website and go to community development http://www.richmondgov.com
Also, RTD says victim is in critical but stable condition. Police Web site says he was shot by a “known” suspect. Not sure if this means the victim knows who the shooter was or if police know who the shooter was.
The police did not shoot anyone and they did not get shot at. They do have leads on the shooter and are working hard to make an arrest and get yet another violent criminal off of our streets. Also, there was not a school bus at the school when the shooting occured.
Why do you think this hasn’t been on the news?
non-fatal shootings don’t always make the news.
depends on what neighborhood you live in. non-fatal shooting in windsor farms = makes the news.
The last posting is correct but is a life in Church Hill any less valuable than one in Windsor Farms? Food for thought people.
I was a little offended that they kept showing a house fire in the Fan and nothing about the shooting in our neighborhood. I totally agree with the above poster.
It must not have sunk in to the paper that some houses up here can cost as much or more than those in Windsor Farms/The Fan these days.
I would much rather have my house up here than anything west of Shockoe Valley.
IS there anything west of Shockoe Valley?
The only thing west of the valley is Five Guys.
