Richmond police are investigating a robbery by three suspects who they say attempted to use a pit bull as part of their attack. The robbery occurred around 2:30pm Saturday in the 600 block of North 32nd Street. [via]

Police said the victim, described as a man in his 30s, was approached by a trio of men who were accompanied by a brown pit bull.

The men ordered the victim to walk down a side street. The victim tried to run away, only to be caught by the group and the dog, said police spokeswoman Kirsten Nelson.

While the dog growled, the men beat and kicked the man as they were robbing him, Nelson said. She said the robbers also “attempted to put the dog on the victim,” but the animal is not believed to have bitten or to have physically attacked the man.

“We believe it was being used for intimidation,” Nelson said.
