a word of warning
A message from Kai Sommer in Union Hill about a recent odd occurance.
Dear fellow Union Hiller,
I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but when Jen & I returned home from work this past Friday (Nov. 10), we discovered one of our cats (Emma), dead. We found her inside our (gated and locked) backyard on the 700 block of N. 22nd, and it appeared that she had been mauled by a dog. Our cats are our family, so I’m sure can appreciate our dismay with this development.
The situation became even more troubling when we realized that an old aquarium had been stolen from the yard (we’re not too worried about losing the aquarium, but, given the circumstances, we certainly don’t like the fact that someone was recently in the yard who should not have been). We discovered a footprint and a crushed hedge near our fence – suggesting that someone climbed over there. Also, the cat was not wearing her collar when we found her – but we later discovered it on the ground several feet away, which struck us as odd. We don’t know for sure how (or if) all these pieces fit together.
I’m sending you this e-mail primarily as a word of caution to other Union Hill pet owners in the hopes of preventing a reoccurrence.
We’re also hoping that you may be able to help. We’re guessing that Emma would have made quite a fuss when she was attacked. We think this happened late Friday afternoon – though it could possibly have been anytime between Thursday night and Friday evening. If you heard anything suspicious – sounds of animals fighting – or maybe have seen a stray dog or suspicious person roaming the area (esp. around Cedar, M, 21st, 22nd or 23rd sts) – if you have any information at all that might help us determine what happened – we would very much appreciate you sharing that with us.
Thanks,
Kai Sommer (kai_sommer13@hotmail.com

One of our first feral yard cats was killed by some other animal, probably a dog. There are too many big and roaming dogs back this way along P&Q Streets. I wouldn’t be too surprised if one had made it those few blocks over to your house.
There are packs of feral dogs that roam thru the Union/Church Hill area. Please call Animal Control 646-5573 with the discription and location of ANY dog you see with out an owner. There are several unresponsible pet owners who simply let their dogs out on the streets to fend for themselves when they decide they don’t have the time or money or they got a new pit bull….
