anybody see anything?

A house on the 300 block of North 21st Street was broken into Saturday night between 5pm and midnight. Maybe someone was porch-sitting or walking their dogs or coming home and might have seen someone/something suspicious?
If they were on foot, they were probably carrying a pink and green floral pillowcase. Jewerly, laptop, digital camera were the big stuff they took. Toothpaste, soap and bathroom scales are the weird stuff. They took a 12 pk of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale from my fridge…did anyone see anyone toting around a large box beer Saturday night?
This is reminiscent of last year…
A man came by sunday offering dog grooming services. He washed my dog with a few bars of soap and then brushed my pet’s teeth. He even weighed him for me at no extra cost. He seemed like he was having a good time drinking his pale ale the whole time. If I knew his supplies were stolen, I would never have tipped him
Obviously Thomas you have never had your house broken into. Please don’t make light of my situation. I wouldn’t wish a home invasion on anyone. Please, serious posts only.
Also from the T-D’s crime log:
1700 block of East Franklin Street, between 12:37 and 5:28 a.m. July 27, someone stole alcohol and money.
Two days before, a few blocks away, alcohol also stolen.
On Saturday night… my neighbor had her car broken into by a random.(600 block of N 22nd) Apparently, they threw a brick into the front window.Unfortunately no one heard or saw anything. They stole her back pack, ipod, and her purse. The back pack was found later by a VCU professor. It had been ditched near campus.
At the last Union Hill Civic Association meeting, Lt.King of Sector 111 said that they’d been having issues with cars being messed with in the area between Shockoe Bottom and the Hill. He also said that a guy that they had put away for B&E before has recently been released, and that they may be seeing signs of his presence.
I’ve updated the crime map data and these incidences are showing up, all clustered in a few blocks there.
John, good info. Thanks.
3 African American kids all wearing white shirts were seen casing the block on 23rd and Marshall by a neighbor sitting on their porch on 8/1/07. Shortly thereafter they broke into a car on the 2300 block of East Marshall while a neighbor of ours was sitting on his front stoop watching them do it! He called the police and they pursued them. I believe all three were wearing long white t-shirts which they subsequently removed while running from the police. Apparently the police actually caught one of the three kids at the scene of the crime (and maybe more later on if the one who was caught ratted out his friends). I would definitely check with the police as the same kids could be the ones who broke into your house. Sorry for your loss!
Scratch that, the crime I mentioned above took place at approximately 9:30PM on 7/31, not 8/1.
The fact that beer was stolen usually indicates that the thieves were young. Why take off with a heavy 12pk when you have stolen enough to buy one?
The toothpaste and soap would make you think they are homeless. (why would your run of the mill thief even go into the bathroom?) I would bet that there was some food missing that you didn’t notice. (Sandwich meat, leftovers, cheese, etc..)
I have no idea why someone would steal a scale.
Just something to help narrow down the (dreaded word) “profile”.
Just my .02
A bike was stolen from my backyard last week. The back yard is fenced, and the fence was locked. However, there is a tree in the alley that you can climb and jump into the yard, then unlock the fence. I live very close to the block Michael wrote about. I am pretty sure the person(s) who robbed me were kids or teenagers that knew my son kept his bike in the back yard. I might have even met him or her before.
About the car breakins………don’t leave stuff in your car where people can see it. This just invites troule.
Which house in the 300 block? I have been wishing to be able to afford the overpriced new house at 320. Man my aunt will not like this news as she thinks the neighborhood is a criminal’s paradise or something.
Also, a Times-Dispatch story reports that Lakendra A. Lathon, 19, of the 2100 block of East Clay Street (two blocks away) is wanted on attempted robbery, robbery, malicious wounding and firearms charges.
A friend on myspace.com told me that he was mugged last night. Here’s part of what he said:
“Tonight i got jumped by two guys. I was walking down 24th street down the hill in the direction of The Market. Two guys, one very dark skinned black, heavy set, wearing a black and white striped shirt, the other skinnier, and lighter skinned, possibly latino, pushed me down, demanded my money, and tried to assault me. Luckily when they grabbed my backpack, I was able to slip out of it and run towards The Market, and out of harms way.”
Another friend told me she lives near 21st and Broad, and in the last 6 weeks her car was broken into and also her moped (a yellow 1978 JcPenny Pinto) was stolen.
And yet another friend said someone was stabbed a few days ago on the stairs near the Superior Warehouse Building near 24th and Franklin.
According to the Richmond Police Department Web site, this makes it the fourth robbery in the area in about a week. Here are the other three:
8/4/07 3:45 a.m.
2111 E. Marshall St.
A male said he was assaulted and robbed by an unknown black male.
8/3/07 1:23 a.m.
2411 E. Franklin St.
A male said he was assaulted by an unknown black male who tried to rob him.
7/30/07 2:45 p.m.
500 N. 30th St.
A male said he was robbed by two unknown black males with a gun.
I’ve given this it’s own post.
My van parked on the empty lot at
2111 Jefferson Ave was broken into.
No damage was done breaking in.
They did leave the front passenger side
door unlocked and unlached. The small
triangle was left wide open. There was
nothing of value in the van and I didn’t
notice anything missing. I only drive
about once per week so it could have been
done anytime since the first of August.
I assumed dog barking scared them off
or they just saw nothing to steal?
The story about the stabbing on the steps by Superior is true. I am the resident manager at the Pohlig Box Factory and the victim was the son of one of my residents.
He was not severely injured, deep flesh wounds in the upper right arm and side, but he was stabbed none the less.
Pohlig Box Factory is looking to purchase the Superior Building and as soon as the sale goes through the first thing I plan on doing is getting a good security camera for that stairwell.
I also contacted the Department of Public Works – WEED DIVISION to cut all the weeds growing around the lamp posts along Franklin Street behind The Market. The weeds are nearly 4 feet tall, a perfect hiding spot for a would be assailant. When the city told me it would be 15 days before they would be out to cut the weeds, I notified them that one of my residents had been stabbed right there and that I would HATE to call Diane Walker with 12 on Your Side to get this fixed.
I’ve notified all my residents about the stabbing and encourage ALL neighbors in the area to report ANYTHING suspicious. This is our neighborhood, and we shouldn’t have to live in fear.
Pohlig Box Factory will also be doing another Self Defense class very soon. I will post a memo on the Church Hill Peoples News to possibly open it up to any Church Hill residents.
