Live Healthy Block Party
08/18/2007 2:40 PM by John M
A few blocks of Cedar Street were blocked off today for the Live Healthy Block Party. Sponsored by the Vernon J. Harris Medical Center, the gathering offered free health screenings, healthy living demonstrations, kid’s activities, entertainment, food, arts and crafts, free giveaways, and free backpacks for kids.
I know this was a good thing for the people that attended but what a pain in the rear for people that didn’t. Music that started at 10:00 am, people parking in various no parking zones and having to park blocks away from where I live. I don’t understand why they could not have put the whole thing in the park. Maybe……..Chimborazo Park?
guess what folks…I live about 4 blocks from this event as the crow flies and I just had my dinner interrupted by 15 rounds of large caliber gunfire seemingly coming from that general direction….I called 911 and got noe response as well as the non emergency police number so I’m sure I wasn’t the only call being made.
It appears the animals are still with us.
just heard the police sirens followed closely by EMT sirens ……some healthy living huh?
Guns don’t kill people …morons with guns kill people.
Outlaw Morons Today!
Ralph — the block party was over at like 3, I doubt that was the source of your gunfire. This was the kind of event with moms and kids getting free health care and folks on stage showing people how to exercise. It could not have been a more positive and wholesome, community-oriented environment.
wonderful to hear…..perhaps I was quick to judge the source but I have been hearing late into the dusk public loudspeakers broadcasting voices..not music …so I thought the event was still going on.
i agree with elloit
that maybe it should be held in the park and not in the street
but i do it that it was close to the community center but did it have to held early in the morning
most people are trying to sleep in because it is the weekend and they have had to work all week
Did someone say something about a booty contest?
On a more serious note, how does someone find out about these things before they happen? Even the most positive events should give more than a few days notice to the immediate neighbors.
I live across the street from Vernon Harris (on 25th), and they came around to our houses easily a month and ahalf before the event to let us know what they were planning to do, asked to sign if it was OK to close the street, etc…
Now, the Halloween event always pisses me off, but the Health Fair is a great idea and very neighborhood friendly.
Why couldn’t they have used the rather large parking lot behind the Vernon J. Harris clinic for this event? After all, it was on a weekend, so the parking lot most likely wasn’t full. That wouldn’t have inconvenienced everyone with closing streets….
Also did they by chance offer free innoculations to school kids? I’m not seeing that in the information I’ve read so far. Neither did the back to school rally – but the school system says that sixth graders have to have a certain innoculation or they can’t get into school and the health department is doing clinics every day this week to give the shots. Given the two opportunities between the health fair and the back to school parade and rally (and particularly the amount of money it took for the school parade and rally) it seems reasonable to offer something like that. The health dept. could have been onsite at one or both of those events…or is that too reasonable to ask?
It was only a four to five hours long. Honestly.
The Health Fair offered free medical and dental screenings to children and adults. Not only were the children given free dental screenings/cleanings they were also allowed to participate in the KidZone “free” which included a petting zoo, clown, ferris wheel, merry go round, moon bouncers, giant water slide and other activities. The adults were able to have free dental screenings and medical screenings. Free eyes exams were also offered. This was a fun-filled family event that was educational and also “free” for the community. Focus on the positive aspects of what the organization is bringing to the community.
