Church Hill Reunion 2007
09/14/2007 7:57 PM by John M
The 25th annual Church Hill Reunion will be Sat, Sept.15, from 2-9PM at the George Mason playground. The entire community is invited to come out and join the fun!
TAGGED: Church Hill Reunion
Was the reunion Friday, Sept 14 or Sat. Sept 15–there flyers giving both days.
I got this info yesterday, for today (the 15th).
All kinds of lazy people attended this event. So much parking on 25th Street and the attendees had to block alleys, bus stops and cruise up and down the street hoping to find someone coming out of a close parking spot. This would been a great event to have in Chimborazo Park. Well, at least it was over on time.
What else would you expect???
I own a property across the street from the park and I was appalled that my yard was used as a dumping ground for litter, empty beer bottles, diapers and whatever else was “too tough” to put in a trashcan.
The organizers need to literally clean up their guests act or count on the neighbors who are affected to ask for restrictions on the event including tailgating/alcohol control, litter control and Police enforcement.
The tailgating on the streets and littering that comes with it has got to stop!
Yeah, I guess the solution is to cancel all of the festivities on the Hill. I am affected by High on the Hog (thankfully canceled this year), and the Italian & Irish Festivals. There is so much noise, trash and general drunkenness during these that I either leave the neighborhood for the day or try to bunker down and just not come out during it, because I have seen and heard some things that just make for an uncomforatble time for me.
While it may be hard to control all the trash while the festival is actually going on, the folks who put on the Irish festival do a good job of making sure everything is cleaned up at the end of the festival. I am sure some trash remains outside the festival area, but we do our best to make sure all is cleaned up.
The same goes for High on the Hog. I have personally picked up every single cigarette butt on Libby Hill the day after.
I agree that the folks that put on the festivals need to be responsible for the mess. I think it is a shame that you would want to cancel all festivities.
I hope the rest of the community does not share that point of view. These festivals are part of what makes our neighborhood unique.
I have no beefs with the Irish Festival and HOTH. Both do a very good job of cleaning up the litter they create. They also hold these within defined and controlled boundaries. I saw no such “boundary” at the Church Hill Reunion. I don’t mind the festival at all, I just don’t like my property getting trashed.
We all are inconvenienced when a street festival is held. But that inconvenience lasts for, at most, two days, and we reap the benefits of increased interest in the neighborhood for the rest of the year. I wonder how many of our new Church Hill residents were first introduced to the neighborhood because they ventured up to “the hood” to find out that we weren’t as bad as they heard from their insulated West End neighbors. If you are inconvenienced, try living on Monument Avenue and losing your privacy to the Easter Parade, every marathon in history, and all those “tourists”. We should be so lucky!
I truly do not want to cancel all festivals, but I guess, as a life long resident of the Hill, I get tired of all of the seemingly selective complaining that goes on here and IRL. All I am saying is that all of these festivals cause problems for the people that live closest to them. Mark had problems at George Mason, some had problems at Chimborazo, and I have problems with Libby Hill and 25th St events. I just deal and accept it, because I like having things I can walk to in the neighborhood. I just want to show a different point of view. And do not suggest I move when I state the issues that occur during the events close to me, unless the others that complain have to consider moving when they complain about things close to them. Fair is fair.
This festival was a complete joke. I just recently moved to Church Hill and was thrilled at the prospect of enjoying my first neighborhood event.
Boy was I mistaken.
There was loud, thumping music from about 10am until late at night, parking…or lack thereof…was ridiculous, not to mention the fact that someone forgot to tell me that I was the wrong color. I was given more dirty looks by people who happened to have a different skin color than myself.
Oh well…and people wonder why different races have issues with one another…(Sigh)
while i was walking my dog on saturday i was invited by several people who weren’t “my color” to please come over and enjoy the reunion. if you want to be pro-active against racism on either side, you have to talk to people and maybe take a few dirty looks from time to time. i personally enjoyed the music and had a great time listening to that loud thumping right behind my house, which by the way lasted from 2 pm to about 10 pm, even though it was unexpected.
my only complaint about the festival is the poor clean-up. there needs to be some kind of rule regarding this if people are going to use the parks for huge events.
I agree, elpahaba! I have had similiar experiences.
most of the festival goers were not “my color” but i did not think about it until seeing some postings on this site. i did have a good time, it was enjoyable. i did not expect that the mess would be cleaned up quickly. maybe you should call your council rep to get some help in that area.
jackie had (and always does have) the best deviled eggs.
Bill – my council rep, Ms. McQuinn, is using an automated phone system that caller ID tells me is from the Richmond Education Association to invite me to a meeting at The United House of Prayer. Is this some sort of mixing up of the division between church and state? To say nothing of mixing it up between church and public schools? And why is she allowed to use the automated phone systems at the Richmond Education Association, when she’s not a teacher?
Not only that, but it’s a male voice on the recording that comes on when I answer the phone – why is she not doing the recording herself? Or is she too busy picking up the trash from the latest festival?
chill, celeste
celeste, you are asking the wrong person. rea has an auto dialer that needs to be paid for. united house of prayer has excellent potato salad. paper money still says “in god we trust”. i have heard that your council rep would not get trash picked up. refresh my memory but wasnt it an earlier preacher/council rep that was a cross dresser?
Hey Celeste, did you raise the question when Mayor Wilder had a meeting at the Temple of Judah on Venable street. Naw……….. I didn’t think so. Did you ask any qustions at the meeting? Maybe you should be discussing some of the good things that happening in the city.Perhaps, you should call Rev. McQuinn and ask her about your concerns. How about picking that up at your latest festival.
I agree with Jones. Some people just never get it.The saga continues on and on and on and on…….
It does amaze me that some commenters can absolutely vilify Rev. McQuinn without ever bringing up their concerns to her. At the same time, many of these same commenters tend to be Wilder apologists and want to blame all the city problems on everyone else in charge BESIDES Wilder.
At the same time, many of these same commenters tend to be Wilder apologists and want to blame all the city problems on everyone else in charge BESIDES Wilder.
What’s wrong with that? Difference of opinions. Some people lean towards McQuinn and some towards Wilder. I believe it’s called the Democratic process. And, Wilder isn’t ALL to blame.
True, we all have differences in opinion.
At the same time, some of the accusations that are flung around are not grounded in fact, so there’s the rub.
Blame+Evil=Wilder

The Annual Church Hill Reunion 2009 will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2009 at George Mason Playground-Ethel Bailey Furman Field.
The CH reunion is an actual reunion from people who used to live on the Hill (and those who still do) to gather socially. It’s not designed to be an entertainment festival like HOTH or the Irish festival.
It’s about the people. Some of my friends from the church I used to attend go every year and their reports are about running into high school friends, people who used to be their neighbors, not about a band or a restaurant.
Just thought I should point out that if you’re expecting something like the Irish festival, you’re bound to be disappointed. But if you’re interested in interacting with the community, meeting new folks, and (if you’ve been around a while) seeing old friends, then this is a great festival for you.
And I agree that clean up needs to happen. That’s just basic respect.
