library seeks volunteers for homework help
09/20/2007 7:02 AM by John M
The East End Library Advisory Council met yesterday evening at the library at 25th and R Streets. The Council is working to put in place programs and events that complement the Mayors’ initiative for the East End Library of increased Early Childhood Literacy, and also to increase users of the library. To get one of the programs up and running, they are seeking volunteers for an afternoon tutoring & homework help program. Interested?
For more information about how to volunteer or to find out more about the East End Library Advisory Council, contact Veronica Holloway at 754-9228 or hollovc@ci.richmond.va.us.
TAGGED: East End Library
I called to volunteer my services as a certified English teacher and the phone was not in service. I called 754-9228. Duh!!!
Lu Motley
Veronica Holloway can be reached at 646-5396 or 646-4474 (the direct number to the library). The number above is incorrect.
Ms. Holloway is very interested in having volunteers help out with the Library’s programs. What a great way to help out in the community. Thanks Lu!!
Hello Bill,
When I finally reached Ms. Holloway I was told the program wasn’t in the works, and may not be because the ones who make the decisions hadn’t gotten it established yet.
As usual, it’s the kids who suffer. Then we wonder why they “act out.”
L. Motley
Who are the ones that make the decisions? Why is there a hold up?
Your criticism seems harsh, but who knows – we don’t have enough information.
I suggest you, Tiny, look the parents and the kids in the eyes and tell them there is no program because nobody is willing to set one up. Then let’s discuss the meaning of “HARSH!”
I agree with the question: Who’s in charge???
L.Moltey
The program is for after-school homework help. This is good, but many kids receive this help other places than at the library.
I am a parent. And I work, so my children are in an after-school program. My kids do have home help through Richmond Parks and Rec, which like all other city agencies, is starved for funds and does the best it can.
I imagine there is similiar story with the library.
Of course, it is a shame it is not set up yet because I am sure it is a program that fills the gaps.
But so much vitriol!
My dear you don’t have any idea…
Lu
Trying not to take offense, but what did you mean by that?
I’m sorry you took offense, but children, especially those who depend on
politicians and bureaucrats to make decisions don’t always get what they need.
Tragically, we now have a good example of a president who is cutting funds for
children’s hosptilization. Young people may not express themselves as grown-ups do; they depend on us to help deliver their needs.
The library is asking for volunteers to help young people learn to read and write, yet someone, somewhere is keeping this from happening. That’s enough to make some people vitriolic, don’t you think.
Lu
L. Motley
No offense.
“Tragically, we now have a good example of a president who is cutting funds for
children’s hosptilization.”
Huh? Show me.
Go to the Senate Channel, 19 on Comcast, and watch them work on the bill today. Then, read thee New York Times this morning. There are 2 articles which quote that Texas born rich fathead in the White House.
Is that mean enough for you Archie????
L. M.
An after thought. The Senate is deliberating the bill as I write. You might want to watch Archie.
L. M.
Lu,
I think George W was also behind the wild dog attacks that happened earlier this year. It’s all starting to make sense now.
Nacho
I thought that was where you were going. Without getting intending to get into a debate over the merits, I will simply observe that the issue being debated is not whether kids should have medical care, but rather what income limits should be for these programs and the age limits for them. The side opposing the proposed bills argue that raising the income limit to 4 times the poverty level and increasing the age limit to 21 effectively expands the program far beyond its original intent.
Lu, if you want socialized health care, I can respect that. But, let’s leave the rhetoric to the politicians.
And let’s not lash out at the local library for something that’s being done in DC!
Why should I not go that way Archie? I realize with the Bush regime our freedoms are threatened, but why should’t I state my thoughts, even though this column is about the library needing tutors.
ALso, do not pull that old word “solialism” out to defend a president who I think is close to madness.
Stop picking on old women Archie. Pick on someone your own size.Better still, help find some tutors for the kids at
the East End Library.
L.M.
Lu, you can think whatever you want. And, I really meant it when I said I could respect it if you want socialized medicine. I have picked on no one and I certainly have no idea whether you are an old woman or a 12 year old boy, nor do I care, particularly. I have merely suggested that we avoid rhetoric. If you find that offensive, I am at a loss.
How quickly a simple discussion can degrade… funny..
I want to know how much of this “initiative” is from the Mayor. If any, then it cannot be for the good of the children…it’s not in his nature.
Good morning all,
Before this column is taken off the page, I want to leave a thought about what is happening in Washinton not impacting Richmond.
I would love to use some West by God language regarding Washington’s impact on Richmond but Mama told me never to go there.
Anyone who does not realize what an impct Washington (our House, the Senate, the person we unfortunately elected president have on local schoools, health care, etc., in short our well beings, should return to school for a Civics lesson.
The students at the library deserve to have tutors to help with English or any other subject they have problems with. Also, I think some objectivity is in order though I do dislike bureaucratic bullies.
L.M.
Lu, I don’t think anyone is saying that what is happening in DC does not affect Richmond.
If the library volunteer issue incites such passion, try to get to bottom of it and find a solution instead of attacking the library or commenters.
It’s hard not to get offended by your posts. I am intelligent, well-read, and pay attention to current events, just like you.
Tiny,
What the blazes do you have against passion? Thank God for it. It spices life and makes love wonderful.
L.M.
Passion is not the same thing as being rude.
How would you know Tiny.. Who are you to set yourself up as the judge and jury of someone you don’t even know, plus whose messages you have misconstrued?
You may lack passion in your judgement, but you yourself are more than rude. Frankly I wonder if you’re not just bored and angry and need someone to pick at.
Lu Motley
…Thank goodness those kids at the library can’t read this!
Nacho,
It’s easy to hide behind a pseudomum and spout and tear others apart. Believe me the kids at the library read far worse. Gosh what a sense of morality!!!!
L.M.
Lu,
You think because you spell your whole name you can be as self-righteous as all git out! This is the end of this conversation for me. I know you. I am friends with your son. Leave me alone – I am not rude or anything else.
How did I tear anyone apart? I just pointed out the obvious disharmony on this board. I am sorry if you read it as a personal attack. I’ll not comment further.
Yours truly,
Nacho Benito Vanderbilt
“The library is asking for volunteers to help young people learn to read and write, yet someone, somewhere is keeping this from happening.”
Seriously, is there some sort of sinister element that is keeping people from volunteering?
Which one Tiny? The sea captain or the artist?
L. M.
Mike,
You’ve made a good point. I may care too much about getting these kids help, but I did discuss it with someone from Richmond Public Schools yesterday; it looks promising.
L.Motley
the library is asking for volunteers but the volunteer activity is not figured out yet. ???
a youth group that i am familiar with asked to use space at the library for a youth meeting/program. they were told they would have to rent rent the space.
now if everything above is true, the city library is bull shit.
i dont care who the president is but if you have some old copies of the ny times i would like them to add to my rtd copies so i would not have to buy toilet paper ever again.
