Tricycle Gardens “Grow Your Own” celebration

Tricycle Gardens will be holding a “Grow Your Own” celebration Saturday, Oct. 20, 7-11 p.m. at the Eric Schindler Gallery. Anyone interested in starting a community garden is invited to attend. Admission, which includes music and food, is $25. RSVP by Oct. 12 to (804) 231-7767.

The organization, founded in 2001 by a group of neighbors and friends in Church Hill, is committed to making the City of Richmond a green, beautiful and healthy place to live. With a shared interest in community, urban ecology and organic gardening, the group provides garden design, technical support, volunteers and resources to people interested in building community gardens.

To date, Tricycle Gardens has helped establish three community gardens in the city and one in Chesterfield County. The gardens are located in the Carver neighborhood, on Jefferson Avenue in Church Hill, at the Neighborhood Resource Center in Fulton, and at the Winchester Greens Neighborhood Center in Chesterfield.

The organization uses Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ greenhouse at Bryan Park and sells plants for vegetable and perennial gardens at the 17th Street Farmers’ Market. As a non-profit member of the Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation, Tricycle Gardens has garnered support from the Community Foundation and the Jackson Foundation and works with VCU student volunteers.
