President William Howard Taft (1909)
01/03/2008 8:32 PM by John M
President William Howard Taft at St.John’s, with Governor Swanson of Virginia (right), and to the left John Satterfield (Board of Alderman) and John Bliley of the Common Council (with flower).
Photo from Fifty Years in Richmond, published in 1948 by the Valentine Museum (though the book is “copyright 1948 Miller & Rhodes, Inc”).
Ahh, Taft, the fattest man ever to be President…he had to have a special tub installed in the white house to accomodate his girth.
It is interesting that Satterfield and Bliley descendants have been in Richmond politics in recent times. Also pictures of Taft recently in Petersburg Museum. He may also have visited there at the same time.
If good food was served, Taft was there!
Once while serving as governor of the Phillipenes, he cabled Washington bragging to the Secretary of State, bragging about his grand horseback inspection of fortifications. The Secretary of State cabled back, “understand you traveled some miles, did the horse survive?”
was william taft the 23rd president of the usa
Taft was the 27th President of the USA from 1909-1913. He followed Theodore Roosevelt and preceeded William McKinley.
I meant to say that Taft preceeded Woodrow Wilson NOT William McKinley. My appologies to the Presidents! Have a good 4th of July.
