“Students in these schools are soaring far beyond the minimum requirements of the Standards of Learning and No Child Left Behind,” said Governor Kaine. “It speaks to the strength of public education in the Commonwealth that the 89 schools that have earned this distinction include schools in rural, suburban and urban communities and schools in every part of the state.”
Irene Williams, the principal at Fairfield, is one of the bright spots in this system. Her school, in the middle of the projects, is at the top of city elementary schools by test results. It can be done.
The east end is in fact blessed with an exceptional group of principals for our elementary schools.
It is a fact which must be repeated over and over again that there are many fine and dedicated teachers and administrators throughout the city. The shame is that we have not built a system to support and encourage those types of people.
Chimborazo also won a VIP Competence to Excellence Award.
