First Precinct creates litter cleanup program

First Precinct Environmental Officer Harold Ford says his biggest citizen complaint is litter. In response, he created the First Precinct Community Service Cleanup program, a collaborative effort among several city departments. You might’ve met Officer Ford at a recent neighborhood meeting or last month’s Sector 111/113 walks. [via]

From the press release:

Every Wednesday from noon to 5 p.m. and every other Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Ford partners with clients from the city’s Adult Local Probation Services to clean up the streets in First Precinct. As part of the probation program, clients choose how they would like to complete their community service and the cleanup program is one of their options. The crew picks up trash on the streets, alleys, and abandoned properties.

The city’s Department of Public Works is supplying gloves, pickup sticks, and trash bags for the program.

“This is a great way to get the neighborhoods cleaned up,” Ford said. “As an officer, we have a responsibility to proactively respond to citizen requests and serve the community.”
