Style reviews Woolfolk & Sons
06/18/2008 10:15 PM by John M
Style Weekly’s Soul Stirrers visits the Mechanicsville Turnpike institution that is Woolfolk & Sons:
Ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender, smoked, slow-roasted and basted with a thick, tangy homemade sauce that’s been properly glazed on the grill. These may be the best ribs I’ve found in town, and they more than make up for the din of the evening news emanating from the gigantic TV in the corner. […] From string beans and collards adorned with chunks of pork to corn pudding that swims in sweet syrup and hush puppies that could be a meal in themselves, it’s the side dishes that set the place apart.
TAGGED: Woolfolk & Sons
I’m going. Nothing beats good southern cooked collards.
If you like good Southern food, Sugar and Spice (formerly on Main Street, now on Mechanicsville Turnpike), is a great place also. The yams are to die for!
Are you talking about the old Sugar and Spice that two sisters operated on Main street in the early 1990’s before the front was opened up? My mom joked that they put valium in the mashed potatoes…the greens were velvety with a glistening sheen, the cornbread big fluffy and moist, and the liver tender and smothered in onions and gravy…I miss meals like that. I was addicted to those greens.
It’s the Sugar and Spice that was where Honey Whyte’s now is.
Woolfolk & Sons Seafood Restaurant is not affiliated with Sugar and Spice Restaurant. Woolfolk & Sons Seafood is a 25+ year old institution located at 1627 Mechanicsville Turnpike. Mr. & Mrs. Woolfolk are the owners. They are still living. Mrs. Woolfolk is the primary chef for cooking every delicious meal that is served in their 4-star restaurant. Mr. Woolfolk is a gem. Don’t go there on Sundays after church…you may wait for a long time because of the delicious home cooked meals that people flocked to after a long and intense worship service.
What are the lunch and dinner hours at Woolfolk $ Son’s? And the price range? I would like to bring my family.
Lucilles’ @ Laburnum Ave & Creighton Rd also has delicious collard greens, yams and a good crabcake too. (Yeah, I know it is in eastern Henrico Co.
I’ve been craving a good crabcake all summer, we’ll check’em out 🙂
The best seafood platter around and the smorthered pork chops, mac & cheese omg yams and more are to die for. mrs.lott’s is the best and she is as sweet as her cornbread. miss james jr. though he could throw down n da kitchen just like his. he was her back bone and right he will be missed but never ever forgotten…
Thank you for the reminder Shonte. Boy am I hungry!
