Union Hill Historic District Initiative gets online

The Union Hill Historic District Initiative has started a blog at http://unionhillrichmondva.blogspot.com. They’ll be “uploading lots of Union Hill stuff to it over the next few days”. They would also like remind folks to attend the Thursday 7-24-08 meeting at EDI for their first major community presentation about City Old and Historic District Designation.

Is Venable St the North boundary for this group’s “Union Hill” or is it Carrington St.? Our homes north of Venable are a part of the National Park Services application for “Union Hill” so why are some of the local groups trying to cut out these couple blocks? Economics, class, culture? Our homes identify more so with Union Hill than our good neighbors in Fairmount. The boundaries in the Park Service application are correct and just.
Here is a map of the proposed district, which has Carrington as the north boundary. I think that this lines up exactly with the National District.
The 2nd page of the info brochure has a map showing Carrington as the north boundary as well. It says that “our present-day boundaries are Carington & O Streets to the norht, 25th Street to the east, Jefferson Avenue and Jefferson Park to the south, and Mosby Street to the west”.

You’re 100% right, the NPS boundaries are the same ones the Union Hill Historic District Initiative are proposing for a City Old & Historic District.

Why isn’t the West side of Mosby and Cedar included in the district? It is very much (and unfortunately) a part of Union Hill. As a Union Hill homeowner, I am just as concerned about a new Jefferson Apartments development as I am the current incarnation. If you look at the area proposed, it really makes sense to draw the boundary around Jefferson Park at Cedar Street and then up Mosby to Venable.
Dave, please attend the meeting this Thursday July 24 at 7pm in the EDI building on 25th Street (first floor conference room).
This would be a great question for you to ask of the city historic preservation staff who will attend the meeting. Tyler Potterfield was involved with the State/Fed/NPS designation, and I bet he knows the answer to your question about the west side of Mosby.
I think it has to do with that side of Mosby not have any “contributing structures”, since the apt buildings were built after 1940.
However, your point about the current Jefferson Townhomes is quite relevant, I think. Especially since the word on the street is that the southern-most buildings (the ones without the security fence) will be torn down “soon” for a high rise.
So, please come the meeting on Thursday, and raise this issue. It’s certainly worth asking about in a public forum. Your timing on this is excellent.

Yesterday, August 19, 2008, we delivered our “request for nomination letter” to the Commission of Architectural Review (CAR). Go to http://unionhillrichmondva.blogspot.com to download the complete PDF of the letter.
This letter asks the CAR to officially start the process of creating a City Old and Historic District for Union Hill. If CAR grants our request, the Department of Community Development/Division of Historic Preservation staff will undertake it’s own research on the proposed district.
Staff will prepare a report and make a recommendation to CAR as to whether the designation process should continue to the property owner survey and public hearing stage.
