Shooting at 25th and Cedar
10/12/2008 10:37 AM by John M
We’ve gotten a few emails and a drunken phone call about a shooting last night, with nothing official yet:
There was a shooting last night around 10:15 on the corner of 25th and Cedar. Three shots left a Mr. Haywood, a retired teacher from Armstrong, injured. No word on his condition.
According to the RTD, Haywood McCallum, is in serious but stable condition.
Damn it! Haywood is a Church Hill/Union Hill institution! He’s one of the nicest guys I know. My heartfelt sympathies for his kin.
I’ve only gotten to know Haywood over the past year, but I’ve learned that he is a trusting, kind-hearted soul, who probably tried to reason with the perpetrators; with the hope he could help them see the error in their ways.
Haywood, best wishes for a speedy recovery. There are so many folks who respect and admire you, I only wish I knew who did this to you, so I could report them to the police. There had to have been somebody who saw what happened, I trust he/she will speak up and help bring justice in this tragic, senseless crime.
From the RTD:
I live in very close proximity to Mr. McCallum. He is a kind man who did not deserve this. I can tell you that when the neighbors heard his cries for help, many of us ran outside, but noone was there in time to see anything.
Please, if anyone saw anything call Crime Stoppers or the RPD.
Here is to a speedy recovery, Mr. McCallum.
I LIVE ON 33RD AND I THOUGHT I HEARD A FEW ROUNDS GO OFF LAST NIGHT BUT I FIGURED IT WAS SOMETHING ELSE…WOW
I am so sorry to hear this happened to
Mr. McCallum. Teachers are near and dear to my heart. I hope for a full recovery.
This is just another reason that every Joe Six-Pack does not need a gun. Our police officers need guns to keep us safe. That should suffice!
Dear Lynn,
Do you actually think that the person who violently attacked Mr.McCallum was a responsible gun owner? Think about it.
Mr.McCallum,
You and your family are in our thoughts and our prayers. Be well.
My prayers are with the McCallum family. I pray that the person or persons that committed this unnecessary act step forward. I’ve know Haywood for well over twenty years as a teacher and friend. I was very upset when I got the news from my mother who lives not too far from Haywood. However, I know that the God we serve is truly awsome and He will bring Haywood through this storm. God Bless!
Retired teacher who was shot still critical (RTD 10/20/08)
A retired music teacher who was injured in a shooting Oct. 11 in Richmond’s East End remained in “very critical” condition last night at VCU Medical Center, a family spokeswoman said.

Dear Anone Mous,
No I definitely would not categorize this criminal as a responsible gun owner. I’m not sure why you asked me that nor do I need to spend anytime mulling it over. MY point is–it is all TOO easy for the wrong people aka irresponsible criminals to get their hands on guns. My belief is that the only people that should have guns are police officers. This isn’t the Wild Wild West. Does anyone know if Mr. McCallum made it though ok?
he was a nice man,but i think his past caught up with him ,he molested so many kids at armstrong high school and other schools,he has gotten away with murder by molesting so many boys, and the courts only gave him a slap on the wrist.he molested me when i was 16 and got away with, im sorry he got shot.
