A man wants to know about a chimney sweep:
Anybody know of a decent and relatively inexpensive chimney sweep in the area? We moved over the summer and want to be able to use our fireplace come winter, but I want to have it checked out before we try to light a fire in it.
You might try Neatsweep. I used them a couple of years ago. I wouldn’t call them cheap, but they’ve been around a long time and I trust them to do the right job. They’re in the phone book.
There are a few things you can do yourself. Have you checked to see that you have a liner in the chimney, and a damper? You can do that yourself with a mirror and flashlight from inside. You can also go up on the roof (with a borrowed ladder), and look to see if there’s a terra cotta liner poking out of the top, and see the condition of the exterior of the chimney.
I use Neatsweep and am very happy with them. This year they charged $99 for cleaning and inspection. They have a lot of experience with old houses and are helpful in guiding you if there are problems.
All seasons Is the only one I would recomend I used to work for them and I’ve seen their work vs. everyone elses
We’ve used Dominion Chimney (now called Eurotech) to reline a chimney a few years ago and sweep the others, and they were nice and seemed to do a good job for a good price, but I don’t have much to compare them to.
