council proposes tree removal moratorium
10/25/2008 2:20 PM by John M
The agenda for the next city council meeting (10/27) has an item of interest if you’re a fan of trees:
Ord. No. 2008-239 – To impose a moratorium on the removal of trees pursuant to the provisions of the City of Richmond Municipal Tree Policy ***, until such time as the City’s Administration makes a presentation to the City Council on the criteria used to determine when tree removal is necessary.
yea!
Fyi, this ordinance is pointless because it says Forestry can still cut down or trim trees if they are deemed a hazard or dying/dead. That is the current policy anyway so they are enacting an ordinance that does not change one thing currently in place.
Tom… consider the source!
We noticed that healthy trees were being cut down in Church Hill last summer. These were very old trees. I was quite upset by it. The cutting seemed senseless. I, too, prefer mature trees. I wonder if they even asked the people who llved in the area if they wanted the trees cut down. They would have gotten a fight from me.
Let me write an addendum, now that I read about the ordinance. Somebody is making the decisions to cut down healthy trees, that person(s) needs to be held accountable. Someone is giving permission to cut down healthy trees. It can’t be that hard to find the source. Cutting down trees not only makes a city look barren, it also lowers property values.
