Halloween kinda sucked

Last year we had a bunch of overflow kids from the cancelled Harvest Fest on 25th Street, this year we had maybe 15. The great fun from last year got me thinking: is there any interest in getting a good block (or few) going up here like they do on Hanover Avenue?
TAGGED: Halloween
It makes all the difference, that’s for sure. Our block had about three houses out of twenty lit up, and we got about the same number of kids you did. The next two blocks over were all lit up and packed with people.
South of Broad was bustling last night -lots of cobwebs, pumpkins (my favorite, a huge blob of a jack-o-lantern munching on smaller carved pumpkins), skulls, strobe lights, ghouls, troops of children -a great neighborhood party.
I think it would be a great idea to get a few more blocks going up here like Hanover.
Not lovin the “kids” (17 year olds, maybe?) that knocked on my door at 10:45, surprised when I told them trick or treat was over for the night, that it was too late, hit the old dusty trail. First time for that.
Thought that might earn me a trick, but so far, nothing. 🙂
There’s a big Halloween block party at the 300 block of N. 27th. This year, the police blocked off the entire block. Lots of fun with spooky characters roaming the street with candy and Halloween festivities!
we live on the 300 block of 27th street. It’s always a great time. This is the first year we have blocked off the street due to safety concerns for the trick or treaters (and thanks to the RPD for the help). Every year it does seem to get bigger and bigger. Come visit us next year!!
I decorated my porch for the first time ever, and enjoyed the trick-or-treaters. They seemed to like the porch, too. I closed shop about 8, turned off the lights, and was not bothered that I know of (but I don’t have a doorbell so maybe I missed it).
Good idea with the light Juliellen! Maybe I was giving the impression that the candy store was still open.
Didn’t even think about that because mine is on a timer.
I was very disappointed in my block. For the third year, I was the only one on both sides of the street passing out candy. All of the trick or treaters passed my house. I ended up sitting with some South of Broad neighbors so I could get rid of all the candy I bought. I would love to see the neighbors North of Broad get together more like the neighbors South of Broad.
Queen, we have something in common. We live on the 2600 block of E. Clay and we were the only people on both sides of the street who were passing out candy too! We found ourselves sitting on the sidewalk hailing parents when they walked by with their trick-or-treaters just so we could get in on the fun. The families that did stop by were great – very polite and dressed in their Halloween finest. We’d love to see our South of Broad neighbors join in instead of leaving or sitting home with their porches dark.
It would be nice to see something like this happen, something kids from the neighborhood and their families could enjoy. We’ve come to hate Halloween because of the Harvest Fest or whatever going on at the EDI. It’s loud, wild and shows no regard for the neighbors. Living on 25th Street, we get the overflow of kids whose parents drop them off and ravage our block. None of them are dressed up and most of them are rude, saying “Gimme candy!” and telling you they don’t like what you have, etc. And then there’s the occasional crackhead who wanders up claiming they’re trick-or-treating for their niece, nephew, etc. And with all the garbage left on our lawn, front porch and forties littering our alley, Halloween is not a day we look forward to.
I usually get a lot of trick or treaters and this year I had hardly any. The 22 and 2300 blocks of E.Broad St. are pitiful as far as Halloween goes! Don’t people know that you shouldn’t put out decorations if you aren’t going to participate? If someone will come to my door and say trick or treat, then I’ll give ’em candy and thank them for coming!
I want to thank those who organized/participated on the 300 block of 27th…my son had a blast (as did his parents). We didn’t hand out candy since we were out. I had hoped to be back early enough to give, but the block was dark by the time we got home, so I didn’t bother. It was quieter without the overflow of the 25th st festivities of years past-which always brought older, costumeless, ungrateful folks.
All in all, we had a great Halloween, and 27th st inspired us to try to organize something further north for next year.
I think Halloween was a little light in the way of trick-or-treaters this year. We had maybe a little more than half of what we normally get. I set up a dungeon every year on the side of my house on 26th & give out candy through the iron gate. It goes over well. I do, however, think that getting something going like Hanover Ave. has is a great idea! I’d love to participate!
