A better city for cycling?
11/18/2008 6:43 AM by John M
Reader cagitate poses the question:
If there was an informal meeting of folks interested in improving cycling in our city (through lobbying, agitating, education, or anything else) – how many would attend?
I’d go to that.
I would!
I’d be there.
a lot. as long as its promoted well.
I’m just a long-term visitor to Richmond, but have extensive bicycling in other spots around the country.
Most specifically, I spent 7 months in the most bicycle-friendly city in the nation, Madison WI. I certainly had my sights raised as to what can be done with planning and political will.
I’d attend, provided a “damned Yankee” can be helpful in providing context to the Richmond situation.
I would definitely attend. I moved here from a city that was much friendlier to cyclists. RABA may be working on something like this, also the Virginia Bicycling Federation. It would be a good idea to build on what others are doing.
I would be interested in participating. I think this is a much needed group if the city leadership is ever going to understand that making bicycling a legitimate transportation option around the city will take more than providing a few bike stands and investment in the 1 or 2 miles of capital trail that is within the city limits.
i’m not much of a cycler, but i would attend and help where i can. i can think of about 12-15 people offhand who would come. my friend does her eco housekeeping business on bike. 🙂 plus, i was part of a composting pilot where we collected compost by bike.
you guys missed such a meeting by just 2 days: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/event.php?eid=50038755069
I didn’t get to attend the meeting, but I recommend you all join the facebook group. I think its headed in the right direction.
I would certainly come to the meeting!
Great link on that Facebook group. The direct link to the organizations’s page is richmondcyclingcampaign.org
I’d be interested in lending my support.
Let’s hype this!
First- thanks John for promoting this conversation. It’s encouraging to see the interest in this community for improving biking in Richmond!
I’ve sent an email to the organizer of the facebook group to see if I can assess what they’re doing, their plans, etc.
In the meantime, I’ve created a web survey to determine what times suit folks best for a meeting post-Thanksgiving.
I’ll get back to everyone through chpn (i’m making an assumption here, john, that you can help me out here!) with the survey results, a location, and hopefully a few other city partners who may join us to report on their efforts (like the new facebook group, RABA, and others).

Forgive my grammar mistakes, please!

Perfect. Hit me up at murden@gmail.com whenever you have an update.
I am very interested! Lets save this planet!
So far, I’ve only gotten 4 responses to my survey looking for a suitable date for a meeting.
Are the dates not working? Should I have added a none of the above category?
Or did people not see the link?
I’d love to pull together a meeting, but not for just a few of us!
Hi – I started the facebook group and secured the domain name.
I’m really interested in forming a bicycle advocacy group. If people weren’t interested in it, I’d just do it myself!
It’s great that so many people here are excited about a cycling campaign.
my email is marksdm@vcu.edu.
I can meet weekends day or evening. I’m going away for thanksgiving break, but We should have a meeting early december. How is Friday the 5th or Saturday the 6th for everyone?
I don’t do Facebook, so I hope there will be some other way to get involved. For me, during the week is best to meet. There are also folks doing similar advocacy at RABA and Virginia Cycling Federation, so it might be a good idea to see what they are up to before launching off.
Hello:
I applaud the enthusiasm here. I have started a bicycling advocacy organization, Go Bike USA, in Palm Springs, CA. Anyone who wants to helps us ascend from novelty to transportation alternative in a rapidly growing region, please write. I’m always open to suggestion.
