Waiting for a ride or whatever
11/28/2008 6:11 PM by John M
There is a woman that frequents the corner of 23rd and Fairmount. She apparently has many friends, as she does not seem to have to wait very long before someone drives by and offers her a ride.
Today, a nice person in a minivan gave her a ride.
We, uh, we know what this scenario is, right?
She’s been doing this for years, so it must not be anything illegal.
That is the same lady i just saw on the corner of 24th and Fairmount
She’s a foxy one. I’m not surprised that she has a lot of friends.
Besides, she’s nice and plump, so you know she’s safe and health, right?
Well, I’m sure John that you’ve taken the time to get to know her, right?
You’re thinking of a different John.
I bet that if you were to start posting photographs of the vehicles and the license plates of said vehicles that give her rides, you might see a change in traffic patterns.
Nyuk nyuk.
I sort of liked the license plate the way it was, though…
vehicle must belong to “John” Doe ….
still, I understand the necessity for caution in identifying the vehicles. Has anyone ever spoken to this lady to see what her story is?
I’d let the police speak to her. If she is a “working lady”, they’ll know. All they have to do is speak to her a couple of times and she’ll find a different corner.
yadda yadda yadda …. I know it is the oldest profession ….yadda yadda yadda, but shouldn’t we be more concerned with addressing the problems that create the situation, rather than being content with the idea that she’ll find a different corner?
Simply talking about it on a blog doesn’t do much, either. Report it to the police. Use 911 if you see a “ride” going down. If you keep reporting it, it will get better. Reducing prostitution in this area is one of our precints initatives.
and what about identifying the men who come into the neighborhood in order to “buy” the services?
Removing the “comfort zone” for the buyer has been proven to reduce prostitution far more efficiently than throwing women in jail ever has.
Pictures? I’d sit there and use video. Get in a car, follow along, while calling the police to let them know what vehicle and plates to look for and where it’s heading.
The police will charge both parties, if a call is made and info such as what Cadeho writes about is given.
If I had prostitutes on my block, I would call every day. I would become a nuisance until the problem was taken care of.
True, posting pictures on a local blog isn’t much use to curb these activities and getting her to move to a different corner isn’t solving the problem.
The police need to be informed the very next time she is seen on a corner and let a sting operation happen to capture her “if” the city is truely interested in stopping this type of illegal (in Virginia) activity.
Maybe she is just waiting for an Obama burger? Or is that a service for .99?
Since when do all of you arrogant SOBs get to decide who can stand on a street corner or pick up a friend and give them a ride? Or perhaps you can share with the group how you know that this woman is engaging in illegal activity — perhaps Radical or Cadeho have some evidence based on personal experience? Can’t a sister just be tryin’ to get herself an Obama burger without being classified as a Hoe?
What a hoot!
SEW: If you were “Maria” you probably wouldn’t think such a statement was a “hoot!”
Bad spelling aside, I see statements like the above all too frequently, in and around our schools, and they always make me want to cry.
I don’t think it’s a hoot either. Post 22 makes me want to know, is the graffiti sign saying Maria’s mother is a big whore, or is it about Maria being a big whore? (sheez I had to type this twice, I’m starting to type hoe instead of the other). Otherwise, I’m in agreement with #22.
Also agree with Cadeho – #15. Get in the car, do the video. Yea they move, but they move somewhere else. Chamberlayne Avenue had this problem, so did Jeff Davis Highway and Reva Trammel got it taken care of.
On a somewhat funny note (thought not for the poor freezing underclothed women) I have a memory of the Wash. D.C. cops getting tired of the street walkers, and driving them all across the 14th Street Bridge one cold winter night, to let the Alexandria cops deal with them.
SO – yes, it’s an age old problem, but if you don’t squawk about it, or do something about it, it will continue on your doorstep, so I encourage the above actions, mostly Cadeho at #15. If I was living up there, I’d be driving while he taped. Good luck guys.
#22 & #23, whatever…I thought it was a hoot. You’re entitled to your difference of opinion, as am I. And, unless you know Maria or her mother, I really don’t think you have the ability to determine whether she is a “hoe” or not!
The owner of this forum john_m (John Murden) the guy you want to run for District 7, posted this and he thought it was and if it is good enough for him then it is for me too. And besides, it was all in fun. Some people are just way too sensative.
I haven’t seen anyone post a solution to the street corner problem or state they are working on it????
I have also seen this woman around and on our street there was one who use to be a scam artist. She would come banging on the door looking for handouts for her starving baby. One day she said she was in a car that had broken down in the street and needed help. When we said we would call the cops to help she quickly got back into the car with her friend and drove off! Can you spell C-R-A-C-K-H-E-A-D ?
Eric
Re: 22
You are assuming that Maria’s mom isn’t a big hoe…
Mike, my point exactly!
“I haven’t seen anyone post a solution to the street corner problem or state they are working on it???? ”
^^Is this really a problem that is affecting how you live here in Church Hill, or is this more of an issue of the age old classic NIMBY?
Sometimes I get really surprised by this website… you know, when I see posts that DON’T have prevalent white people complaining about “their” neighborhood.
The artist who created “Maria Mother is a Big Hoe” is obviously influenced by Cy Twombly’s early to mid-career work, yet takes off from Twombly toward the realist notion of palimpsest/graffiti. As Twombly said in L’Esperienza moderna: “To paint involves a certain crisis, or at least a crucial moment of sensation or release; and by crisis it should by no means be limited to a morbid state, but could just as well be one ecstatic impulse…â€
Well said, my old friend. Well said.
Anone Mous,
I’m assuming that you live in Church Hill but even if you do not, would you really be okay with prostitution going on out in front of your home? It’s really irrelevant whether a white person or a black person (or Asian for that matter) is complaining about illegal activities going on the neighborhood. It shouldn’t be tolerated. If we do tolerate it, it pushes our neighborhood back in time and works against the neighborhood progressing to a better place to live, work, and socialize. Of course, that’s just my humble opinion but probably once shared by many who live here; black, white, purple, or green.

Mike:
NO — I am not assuming anything whatsoever about Maria’s mother’s employment.
EVEN IF it is true, why should a child have to deal with the shame of seeing her OWN NAME used in such a manner?
Does the CHILD have any control over the activities of the PARENT?!
Post #31… where did that come from…?
SEW:
Let us consider for a moment that the statement is FALSE. How might you feel if you were to read:
“SEW’s MOTHER IS A BIG HOE!”
Now, consider how it might make you feel if it were true …
action team, you must be refering to a different thread!
second post #31, it is places like these around the neighborhood that make it such a wonderful place to live. i don’t know if it is Celeste, but i have heard that some people are making life tougher for this new business…shameful
john m, I can’t find a link to yesterday’s TD editorial, “Anonymous Bile” on page A14 and it is worth posting. It would add to the recent debate regarding anonymous blogging.
(Here is that (ironically unsigned) editorial Anonymous Bile — john m)
re: #31 WTF are you talking about? Nothing you said has anything to do with anything that was stated on this thread. Personally attacking someone out of context like you did is pathetic, and is yet another example of the cowardly hiding behind a pseudonym.
There is nothing wrong with using a pseudonym and most of us know who we are, anyway. But, personally attacking someone is not right, pseudonym or not.
Radical!,
“Let us consider for a moment that the statement is FALSE. How might you feel if you were to read:
“SEW’s MOTHER IS A BIG HOE!â€
Now, consider how it might make you feel if it were true …”
How old are you? I guess you’re resorting to sticks and stones here. In any case, to answer your question, I really wouldn’t give a shit because it would be written by something acting childlike such as yourself.
I learned a long time ago to not care what other people thought of me. I’m happy with myself and that’s more than enough for me. You, on the other hand, have some serious issues…
Re #32. Without the proper punctuation this could mean many things.
Obviously, we can pick “Maria’s mother is a big whore”
or
From sibling to sibling, or father to child:
“Maria, Mother is a big whore”
or
The three dots after “hoe” mean the word is not complete either due to time contraints or it’s a word game.
“Maria Mother is a big hoenir.” (Which means someone of beautiful body but weak mind…then again that could be the same as written)
or
MAYBE satire is LOST on you in the FIRST place. (doesn’t random capitalization just look silly…)
Nothing wrong with a pseudonym but attacking someone personally under one is a double whammy and cowardly. Better to attack politicians, public issues, institutions, etc.
The editorial I mentioned above (#37) is very timely.
It is no less cowardly to personally attack someone while using your real name. Which has happened on the blog many times in the past. The problem is the personal attack, but I guess I can see how some people might think they have more freedom to attack while anonymous.
correction on #42: Better to “harshly criticize,” not “attack.”
No, SEW, no sticks and stones at all.
Simply an attempt to provoke some empathy from you for Maria. As in, how would you feel if ……
I do note that despite your assertions of not caring what people think of you, my comment seems to have struck a nerve and inspired you to cuss and attack me as childlike.
Geezzz… have people gone crazy here?
First off, it is both degrading and slanderous to call anyone a Hoe (a/k/a/ whore) no matter how much it is used in today’s culture.
Second, Virginia Code § 18.2-346 (Being a Prostitute) and § 18.2-349 (Being a John) are both illegal in this state.
There appears to be an issue with the woman in the photo who is “suspect” of such acts and seen on numerous occasions getting into different vehicles. If that is the case then someone needs to quit slinging dirt and call the cops to investigate. Nothing is being accomplished calling one another names.
What started out to be funny has ended up being a finger pointing shout match since some people are just way too sensitive.
If you are truly interested in stopping such street scenes then quit wasting time here and actually do something constructive!
Eric
Mike,
Oh, I love word games! I also love “alternative endings.”
So, consider this — the spelling and grammar-challenged author of the “Maria” sign was interrupted mid-word and really meant to write …
“Maria Mother is a big …
“hoeney” [meaning, HONEY]….
“hoepe” [meaning, HOPE] …..
I love a guy w/a sense of humor 😉
I like the interrupted mid-word idea, but I think you guys are misreading that last letter. It is a “c” with a smudge in the middle not an “e”.
The rest was supposed to be “key Mom.”
LOL!
Score!
#48 my favorite too.
This is a very mean-spirited post. Do you really need to put a photo of her up? You really don’t know what her life is like at all.
