If any of our lady readers…

From the Local Matters section of the Dec.3, 1860 issue of the Richmond Daily Dispatch:
At an early hour last Friday night, a female infant, aged about six weeks, was deposited at the door of a resident of Church Hill, where it was shortly after discovered and sent to the first station-house.–As no trace of its heartless mother could be discovered, the little creature was taken care of till Saturday morning, when Mr. Lewis McGruder, the housekeeper, took it to his house till other arrangements could be made for it. If any of our lady readers wish to adopt as their own a pretty little girl, they had better call and get this one.

If only they lived in Nebraska
I wonder what the outcome was on this? Obviously there were no court procedures concerning adoption in those days? Just come and get it!
The Richmond Daily Dispatch can be a treasure chest of Civil War era information around Church Hill. I noted ads in it by Martin Sweeney renting out our house in 1861 listing it with 9 rooms and freshly painted. At that point the North wing was still part of the house as a whole. Among other ads connected with our house including runaway slaves and business ventures as well as makeshift hospitals in those buildings.

I do pray this is a joke; for I find no humor in it. I do hope you are not speaking of a human child; and if so, I do pray the proper authorities have been contacted!
Oh, I see now. My appologies. .. this was a news article written in the 1800s. Times were so much simpler then. I feel so strange realizing that society has colored my views of right and wrong; as such a response would have most likely attracted a loving mother.
Thanks for sharing. Twas an eye opener for me, indeed.
