seeking similar fools from other neighborhoods…

Based on how well Church Hill People’s News had been received by the community, over the past 18 months I helped start other such sites across Richmond. Some of these I’ve been publishing while hoping that they’d be picked up by people that, like, actually live in the areas covered by the sites (but this hasn’t happened). Unless someone steps up fairly soon, Carver & Jackson Ward News, River District News, and Hills & Heights are going to go dark.
How much time and energy is needed to keep this site updated and posted? My daughter recently moved to the Jackson Ward Area . . .and I have some roots there, thus I may be interested.
Thanks!
There are a few pieces to this. At the baseline, I spend about 20 minutes a day working through a set of bookmarks and checking email for each site. Individually, each site site is not a huge time suck.
To really have the site be all that it can be, I’d need to attend more of the area meetings. The monthly Historic Jackson Ward Association is a great source of on-the-ground detail that would be of interest to folks in the area, but is generally not the kind of thing that is going to make the larger media. Ditto for the CACIL meeting. Doing these things take time, beyond what I’ve been able to do for more than 1 site.
The public meetings for the Gilpin/JWard North redevelopment are under reported, for further example.
Finally, there is the time invested that is just spent being in the area. If you live or work in Jackson Ward, you’ll observe things that are the real neighborhood news – like new work at Eggleston, or house being renovated or torn down, or a new business popping up… I’ve not been able to bring this type of observation as an outsider.
I would be glad to sit down with y’all at any time and walk you through this.
Wow, this is better suited for somone who actually lives in the area. . . I thought I could do it with my daughter (who lives in the area; but she is not interested. Regretfully, I have to pass. . . However, if there is a special event going on in the area . . . I’ll be glad to cover it sometimes. I’d hate to see the web presense disappear. It can be very informative – and it gives a perspective from the inside out; rather than from the outside in.
Blessings. . .
Keep an eye on the Open Assignments, I’m trying to make it easy for people to pick-up this kind of thing.
