Neat photo – but I can’t figure out where it was taken from. A helicopter ride, perhaps?!
The houses in the lower left corner are Elm Tree Row, on 19th Street facing the parking lot; directly behind them is the insurance agency fronting on Broad Street, followed by the church with no steeple, and Duke’s Auto, then the intersection of 21st & Broad….the lower right corner is the top of the condos on Broad Street, and the shot is from that direction, but higher than those roof tops. The observation deck of City Hall would have a different perspective, I think….and somehow this makes the water tower look a lot closer than it is.
I’ll be real curious to hear from what angle the photo was taken! Oh, maybe a balloon ride hovering over the Exxon station?!
Yes, truly a neat angle, and thanks for the quick response! It’s really weird the way the water tower looks so close! I just noticed, too, that the condos at the northwest corner of 22nd and Broad are almost invisible, if I didn’t know they were there I’d miss them entirely, and yet the brick house on the northeast corner of the same intersection stands out. Great shot!
Unfortunately, the reverse angle is pretty crappy. Trudging up Broad Street from the Bottom to MCV has to be one of the most depressing walks in Richmond. Especially in the winter.

I was in a parking lot behind one of those buildings on Broad at the top of the other hill, shooting across the valley. It was a neat angle to catch.

Depressing – and dangerous, especially crossing the I-95 on-ramp.
John M.- thanks for the info and what a cool photo
