McQuinn resigns, appointee to be named on Feb.9
Delores McQuinn resigned her City COuncil 7th District seat last night to take on her new position as a State Delegate. Her short-term replacement will be named on February 9th; an election in November will fill the seat until the end of the term.
From the RTD article:
Richmond City Councilwoman Delores L. McQuinn concluded her tenure in City Hall last night before she crosses East Broad Street to work in the General Assembly.
“I hope that I’ve been instrumental in helping to change the city of Richmond and my district,” the longtime 7th District councilwoman said.
[…]
McQuinn’s colleagues and residents praised her leadership on Richmond’s slave trail and Slavery Reconciliation Statue projects, as well as its annual back-to-school rally and parade.

McQuinn was appointed to the council in 1999 and re-elected five times, including in November to a four-year term. She also served six years on the city School Board.
I welcome the change but hope the appointed council member is someone with a sincere and meaningful attachment to our district and not an old buddy of Ms. McQuinn and her friends. That would likely lead to more of the same . . .
I thought she would never leave.
The City Clerk on the 2nd Floor of City Hall [or LOU.ALI@RICHMONDGOV.COM ]will accept resumés and applications through January 22.
I hope whoever they choose is more racially balanced in mindset towards the community!
First of all the rules need to be changed. The council should not be appointing the representaive for the 7th District. The citizens of the district have the right to name their own person for the seat. We just had an election in November 2008. Because Mrs. Mc Quinn did not serve any of this term her election should be void. As the runner up in the recent election it would only be fare that I, Clarence Kenney get the appointment for the full term. The Mc Quinn camp knew all along that she would not serve the term, this is a disservice to this community.
I have lived in this community all of my life right in the heart of Church Hill on Broad street for fifty years. I have seen the changes and the manipulation. Enough is Enough! The same old names get recycled for positions in this disrict time after time with poor results for the majority of the citizens. All of these names that I am hearing for the appointment were all friends and allies of Mrs. Mc Quinn, now the S has hit the fan. Why did’nt any of these people run in the november election? That is because they supported Mc Quinn, or at least supported the work she has done for them in the past. These people have been playing buddy buddy while the majority of the district benefit.
People have said they don’t know me. This is because I am in the trenches trying to help those who are most in need. Many people in the district, they know that I am honest and no nonsense. They know I care about and know the needs of this community, but I am not a card carying member of the clique. I have not seen most of these people black or white down there in the trenches. If we would help the so called lowest of our citizens we will improve the community for everyone, and yes we do have a race problem in this district, keep it real. We can fix that, It’s not about me. It’s not about you, It’about us.
This is a God given opportunity to make a real change in this district for everyone who lives here black, white, rich, poor, and in between. This appointed is an attemp to continue business as usual, let’s stop it. Break the machine!
