get discounts on composting bins
Apartment Therapy’s Re-Nest has the details on how Richmond-area residents can get a deal on a home composting bin:
If you live in Richmond or the surrounding towns and counties, the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) wants to make home composting an even more attractive option for you. Residents of the 13 member jurisdictions of the CVWMA are eligible to purchase select home composting bins at a discount from two online retailers.
Residents […] can choose from four different compost bins. Covered Bridge Organic offers residents a 30 percent discount on the Soil Saver and the Wishing Well. Solarcone offers discounts on the Green Cone and the Green Johanna composting bins.
The CVWMA believes home composting will help reduce the need to collect yard waste for recycling. We think this discount program is a great way to get people involved in composting, and hope other local municipalities establish similar programs in the future.

Can anyone recommend one of the discounted compost bins. We already have one compost bin for our kitchen scraps (only plant material) and garden waste, but I would like another as a compost “finisher”. I prefer the plastic compost bins b/c I think they are a more neighborly compost option than open pile, chicken wire, or wooden pallet bins. We have found that composting and recycling really does cut down on the amount of household trash that we toss in our big green can. I am curious about the Green Cone and Green Johanna b/c they accept animal products (meat, bones, egggs, etc.). Is composting animal products really a good idea in an urban area with the occasional rat?
