A green space for dumping
02/08/2009 5:47 PM by John M
An email from a reader tipped us to a dump of tires and rusted 50 gallon drums in the woods and water along side Glenwood Avenue.
There are 4 or 5 of the rusted drums and maybe 20 tires, along with countless bottles and other small items. Anybody want to pull together a clean up for this?

I’ve got a dump truck. The city dump will take tires maybe three at a time, otherwise I don’t know what to do with them, the barrels can be recycled.
Any clue what substance was in the drums to begin with?
I spoke with:
Darlene Mallory,
Support Services Manager
Clean City Commission
Phone: 646-8325
She said that if volunteers pulled the debris and seperated it into piles (tires, barrels, trash, etc.) the city would come and pick it up. She said it would be helpful if we could do this by the end of the month.
Anyone interested in helping to clean-up this site this Sunday or Monday (President’s Day Holiday for you government employees).
I can be out there either day.

I’ve just spoken with Frank Wood, the owner of the property. The big stuff should’ve been moved up to the road today, the smaller stuff tomorrow.
He asks that if you see anyone dumping on Glenwood to please call the police and also to call him at (804)334-6957.
He said that he really appreciates that the community was willing to get involved in this.
I drove by the site today (Wednesday afternoon) and it looks like most of the junk has been cleaned up. There were at least two piles of tires (probably 15-20 tires in each pile), a dozen barrels and several trash bags. I am very impressed with everyone that was involved with getting this site cleaned up in record time (3 days) from the original blog posting, to community volunteers ready to help clean up the site, to the Channel 8 news coverage, the response by the city and quick clean-up done by the property owner. Good work all!
If this is private property why isn’t the owner responsible for its upkeep and maintainance?
Sure make the owner clean up someone elses mess. It is not like the Owner did it and it sounds like everyone acted in the right manner because plenty of times owners don’t alway visit their property every day.
Congrats all on a job well done and I hope they catch the dumpers and give them back their stuff.
