New trees and mulching at Libby Hill Park
The Church Hill Planters and the Friend of Libby Hill Park pulled together community volunteers to plant 24 new trees and mulch 40 existing trees in Libby Hill Park this morning. About 60 people turned out to help, including a solid contingent from the Richmond Tree Stewards.
The new trees include dogwood, redbud, serviceberries, yellow wood, and white oak. All of the trees planted are native species to Virginia. (To find out more about the importance of planting native species, check out Douglas W. Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens – or give him a listen online….)
As much as everyone involved worked for the pure interest of seeing new trees and a beautiful park, the spread of muffins, brownies, and a frickin’ fantastic split pea & ham soup was a nice reward after a morning of labor. Thanks to everyone that cooked, planted, mulched, and watered!
Thanks, John,I agree it was a fantastic event! Our updated head count for the day is close to 80 and includes city arborists Mike Mather, Norm Brown, and Luke McCall, Parks and Rec staff Wyn Price as well as arborist Dave Tate from True Timber Tree Service, and a large contingent of Richmond Tree Stewards. Thanks to these folks and other neighbors near and far who gave time and muscle to get the job done. And I echo the comments on the food prepared by members of the Church Hill Planters and other neighbors — delicious!
Cheer’s to the community spirit that makes me proud and just plain delighted to live in this city.
We who cooked the food to feed those ambitious workers were having a good visit in the Libby Hill Park House, when the door suddenly burst open and a young women stood there exclaiming:”This is wonderful! I’ve never seen anything like it before!”
I had to ask: “What are you talking about?”Moving to the porch of the park housewhere the scene revealed many busy
planters mulching and planting new trees. Our visitor was right. It was wonderful!

The people working out here planting trees!
And the Orienteering Meet on the next hill over was a big success too. Amazing how many folks came out for that.
Thanks to all those who gave up valuable free time on their weekend to do this. Those of us who live in other parts of the city and come to Church Hill to enjoy the beauty of Libby Hill Park appreciate your efforts!
Nice to see positive comments here. Thanks to all who helped out. We all benefit.
Sorry Juliellen, but not to be too negative but have to ask where were all the BIG Players/Talkers that were at the CHA membership meeting on the stadium voting night?
Seems like most of them (but not all) only show up at CHA meetings to voice their opinons and then are somehow missing when there is work/real community improvement activities to be done.
