25th Street Roundabout construction to close intersection for several weeks
02/27/2009 3:12 PM by John M
The City of Richmond Department of Public Works today announced that work to complete the final phase of 25th Street Roundabout construction will necessitate the closing of the intersection of 25th Street, M Street, and Jefferson Avenue from Monday, March 2 until early April (weather permitting).
Wow, good amount of time. While it will be a pain to avoid that intersection(and poor Que Pasa) I think it will be really nice when it’s done.
I still think it’s a waste of money and the last design that I remember seeing doesn’t make it a roundabout.
Are there any sketches of what it’s supposed to look like when it’s finished? I go through there every day, and I can’t visualize what a roundabout there is going to look like.
The only image that I’ve been able to get is from a Nov.’07 7th District Meeting, and it may or may not be accurate any longer:
Hmmmm, looks like the same intersection with an obstacle thrown in the middle. Any idea if there’s going to be a statue or anything in the middle? Suggestions anyone?
I agree with Ramzi, they’re throwing an obstacle in the middle. How’s this going to take away the use of the lights? Been going through this interection for over 30 years… I just hope this won’t prove to be a waste of time and money.
Why are they doing this?
At the 7th District Meeting linked above, a representative from the Department of Public Works, said that
It’s not a circle! The intersection is not even big enough. The lights work fine. They’ll end up tearing this up like they did the Ryland and Grace useless slab of concrete.
…and make your hair more shiny!
Personally, I’m excited to see the finished product. The improvements to the sidewalk and the elimination of the hideous traffic lights will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
It looks just as horrible as I’d imagined. How did they justify the need for this? I mean, is this intersection notorious for accidents, or something? I’m relatively new to the neighborhood, but I only live two blocks away, and I haven’t seen or heard of any problems there.
The repaired sidewalks are nice, and certainly helped beautify the area. I’ve been here for 8 years, and don’t recall many accidents in THAT intersection, but there have been way too many at 26th and M, as well as 27th and M. M St has no stop signs and has a lot of speeders who go all out from the 25th St light to their destination. I’m not sure the traffic “circle” will help reduce any of that. Hopefully it turns out nice, and adds some green space to freshen up the intersection.
I think that the roundabout will actually make the intersection more dangerous for pedestrians, which we have a lot of in this particular area. I really wish we would not go through with this.
7 shannon, why are they doing this? how about: the money came from the state/federal govt and it need to be spent.
#15 bill – and McQuinn used it in her campaign literature last time she got re-elected, as an example of her accomplishments. As I recall, she quoted the cost at $500,000 with some gibberish about ‘to enhance traffic congestion’ or something like that.
Perhaps the roundabout will help “soften” the look of the area a bit? The traffic lights are confusing and I don’t see how it’s pedestrian friendly in its current state. There are too many lights to pay attention to and one is always green!
There are too many wires hanging all over the place so a few less will be a welcome change.
