Slaughterama moving to Chimborazo Park?
03/14/2009 10:52 AM by John M
We’ve heard word that Slaughterama 6, Richmond’s weird & world-class cyclist gathering and cultural event traditionally held on Belle Isle, may be held instead in April 3-5 at Chimborazo Park due to the closing of pedestrian access to the island.
Photo above by Ross Catrow (April 1, 2006).
That would be awful exciting to the neighborhood and bring tons of business. I am sure cyclus would boom that weekend. But what would the neighborhood think?
Part of me thinks that folks would freak the fuck right out, but I’ve seen unexpected people taken in by the site of the tall bikes going down the street. I’d love to see this be for real.
Folks close to the event refuse to confirm this, btw 🙂
Well as long as the trashed is picked up… and the bikes don’t damage the park. I will have a front park view.

Wowie ! Those CutThroats sure are O.C.D. about recycling!!
Bring it.
Folks close to the event refuse to confirm this, btw 🙂
^^There is a reason for that.
While your information has potential for eventually being the truth, at the moment in time, it just isn’t. The Slaughterama has, without fail, always taken on the full responsibility for all clean up, as well as removal of all items that have been brought. The Slaughterama has been responsible for leaving the part of the belle island, with which it has been held each year, in better condition than it was before the event. It’s called Stewardship and it’s not hard to achieve.
Naysayers aside, if there are any, the Slaughterama brings an element of rejoicing community. People from all over the United States talk about the Slaughterama as an uplifting social event tailored to people who do more than just ride their bikes. It is ONE DAY of celebratory expression in which RICHMOND VA is the host and all, who take it for what it’s worth, leave better than before they came.
Slaughterama is what it is, and it WILL happen regardless of it’s location.
Which is currently TBA.
See you in April.
check out the creepy eyes on that dog in the background.
I heard last year was the end of slaughterama. what is going on?
Anone Mous ‘s link sums up the atmosphere of this webpage.
And when this year’s class graduates there’ll be 1500 more kids who think *they’re* bad ass and cutting edge.
Yawn.
Pass the salt.
Not impressed or interested in any way.
I would be amazed if all those drunk kids could make it up the hills to the park.
I’m sure I’ve seen them riding through Jackson Ward, definitely a head turner. Sort of like Mad Max crossed with BMX.
We welcome such events to Chimbo and CH but in past years there are a few things (not all – but a few) that go on at this event that are not for viewing by children and are also somewhat illegal. We need to insure that the organizers of this year’s event fully understand that they are going to be in a neighborhood and not held on a limited access/sight island in the middle of the James.
A cooperative and civil approach to this event will be in everyone’s best interest and is highly encouraged.
Slaughterama and the Cutthroats in no way endorse or have previously endorsed ANY illegal behavior. Several of us are parents and all of us are community members. Locations are thoroughly vetted, and, at this point, TBA. If you have any specific questions about what goes on at Slaughterama, feel free to drop us an e-mail or ask one of us on the street! Don’t be shy, now!
wait, where is it going to be held? I have lived in the rva area for a few years, (I am a member of the arts community) but I have never attended, either because when it started I heard about it after the fact, or I just missed out entirely! whats the sched look like- and do you need volunteers? and what would volunteers be doing?
thanks!
I am sure that there are internal bi-laws, policies and decorum that is expected and indorsed by Slaughterama and all the Cutthroats. However, as we know from time to time some individuals do get carried away or deviate from established rules and conventional regulations.
On Belle Is. you were, for the most part, you were not located in the middle of a established neighborhood – as Church Hill/Chimborazo Park. Therefore, perhaps more diligence to conventional standards of behavior might be strongly suggested to the members/participants for this year.
I would be in everyone’s best interest and productive that we meet/discuss all of this before the actual event. Please provide me with a phone number or e-mail address – whereby I can contact you. Thanks.
It would be in “EVERYONE’S BEST INTEREST” to continue their normal lives and mind to their own damn business.
A message to CURMUDGEON…
OUR NAME AND FUNCTIONS ARE OF NO CONCERN TO ANYONE BUT US, AS WE WERE NEVER PLANNING ON HOLDING OUR EVENT IN CHURCH HILL.
How many times must it be officially posted, BY US, and made publicly available that we are NOT HOLDING THE EVENT IN CHURCH HILL.
We did not spread this rumor, and this viral display of public misinformation has made a tarnish on our UNOFFICIAL, but WIDELY RESPECTED non the less, public record of working with our environment, and it’s community, to ensure that we are not a determent to the area we hold our events. We hold events in 3 additional cities inside the US and have a pretty good grasp on how to handle our own events and functions.
All this nay’saying and half way talk about “Standards of Behavior” have no place in our mission and goals of providing something real that public and participate in and not just some regulated, candy coated, circus. We are our work, and our job isn’t motivated by anything other than our need to create, and to enjoy our creations.
You can try and continue to get in our way, but I must warn you… we are facing the other direction, so good luck with your agenda as our agenda is working out just fine without you.
-A Cutthroat.
-A Chruch Hill Resident.
-A cyclist that has NO problems scaling our lovely hills in, or outside, our amazing city.
^^I am these things and much more.
What are you?
I would like to add that if we were going to hold the event in Church Hill, it would have been our responsibility to contact the appropriate people in proximity to our event, and not wait for contact from some glorified anonymous viceroy on a internet message board.
We hold our event’s in public spaces. It’s no different than a game of basket ball. It’s just much larger and has many more spectators.
I hope that all who read this can see through my personal frustrations and get the point that I was trying to make.
For my own sanity, this sentence:
…and this viral display of public misinformation has made a tarnish on our unofficial…
Should instead read:
…and this viral display of public misinformation has made a TARNISHED MARK on our unofficial…
And the sentence:
…something real that public and participate in…
Should read:
…something real that public CAN participate in…
^^Syntax is my bane, and hyper-punctuation is just a habit.
“standards of behavior” – this kind of doublespeak is not welcome.
Anon, don’t feed the troll. 🙂
i for one would love to see this in CH. we need less of curmudgeon around here.
The Slaughterama 6 Big Chill Polo Tournament ….. Sunday April 5th With 4 vs 4 tandem halftime matches
…that was priceless. Just priceless.
*sidenote – John, when you mouse-over the Facebook icon, it reads Fecebook.
fixed, thanks.
Sounds like the membership, writers on CHPN and organizers need chat and find out where they indeed or holding the The Slaughterama 6 Big Chill Polo Tournament on Sunday April 5th. Maybe I am missing something here but “brought to you by: The Cutthroats and RVA Polo”, on The Chill leads me to believe it IS going to be on or near Chimbro and with flyers too.
All I am asking is we talk before the event…and to quote eva above: If you have any specific questions about what goes on at Slaughterama, feel free to drop us an e-mail or ask one of us on the street! Don’t be shy, now….
OK, so let’s talk.
The smaller events of Slaughterama weekend are being confused with the actual day of “The Slaughterama”, which is Saturday the 4th, and the location is still TBA.
OK, we will see where things are to be held. Eve – if it is at Chill, please pass to the Cutthroats that I have contacted City Parks and Rec to get lots of big containers and supercans to facilitate trash control/pick-up at your event. And as a friendly reminder, that there are no bathroom facilities in/on/near Chimbo Park area other than the Nat Med Museum and the Park Round-house on the East end of The Chill.
I heard Slaughterama is going to be held in Oregon Hill.
that’s funny…Slaughterama out-grew O Hill yeeeears ago.
I assume the matches will be on the top of Chimbo Park…
So, wait, those of us who live around the park are not allowed to have any say so about the parks usage or the events appropriatness? Come on.
Are you niave enough to think that the pictured linked to your organization would not cause questions?
This is what happens when you utilize technology to relieve the strain of formal, in person, conveyance of official information.
This message board is NOT an official, or even an appropriate, place for communication with the CT’s or affiliates of the CT’s.
Your communications with the city was, I hope, not on our behalf. While the gesture is of a positive nature, surprising to me in an equally positive way, it still holds true that our events, all weekend long, are still TBA.
Our business is now public business and it never should have been this way, especially this far away from the event. Relatively speaking, our time tables may differ from your own.
Appreciation is extended towards your help with the city and Chimborazo Park. Perhaps sometime soon, on a FAR smaller scale, we can work together to have something in the beautiful Chimborazo park. But currently… all events are TBA. The park was, regardless of the POLO post, never a confirmed spot of interest for Slaughterama. It all stemmed from wanting Bike Polo(in general, not just the Slaughterama Event) in our neighborhood. I personally think it can, and should happen(weekly church hill polo). It’s a positive, team building, physical activity that ALL can learn.
RVA BIKE POLO… That’s more suited for Chimbo… and could equally bring a fair amount of outside pedal traffic to the hill. Would bring good people.
Our events are not intended to inspire fear.
Slander, as well as misunderstanding and hearsay, help create this fear.
Sincere salutations.
-A.
Amen.
Anon,
While I understand your argument, you are becoming quite defensive therefore your voice is getting lost. Perhaps shortness is in your best interest and maybe even silence? Who cares what people think? If it’s not going to be held in Church Hill, then it’s not. Say your peace and move on. Some people around here most likely won’t be happy no matter what.
I for one would LOVE to see this here ’cause it’s different and the park is so underutilized. It just sits here, most of the year, only being used by joggers, dog walkers and the random history buff (in the warmer months people clean and/or fix there cars).
Like someone above said already, I would just ask that care be taken with keeping it family-friendly.
FYI to Slaghterama and the Cutthroats: Belle Island is reopening today with the completion of the overhead repairs to the foot bridge. Access is now only from the North bank to the island while they are still working on the emergency vehicle bridge on the Southside. Nonetheless, its open and available for visits, fun and activities.
if i was a cutthroat i would not want to have anything to do with chimbo after this treatment. nice job, church hill! way to go! see you at the crappy irish fest with the rest of the boring, old white people!
we live here. we work here. we play here. you can play with us too, if you are into that type of thing. this is going to be the best bike summer ever!!!!!
frankly, who cares where it’s being held. as an event for cyclists, i imagine few of us would have any problem getting ourselves to church hill, or anywhere else for that matter. its pretty easy: you get on your bike and pedal. as for being a family friendly event, it is, just perhaps not in the ways that curmudgeons like Curmudgeon would see. and regardless, if you don’t like what you see at The Slaughterama, you can walk or ride or (likely) drive away. its a big city, and you don’t have any more of a right to the public park than anyone else simply by living nearby. it is not YOUR park.
RIDE A BIKE. IT’S STILL FUN.
Well this is a real downer: police say participants from this event, possibly a group visiting from out of town, on their list of suspects for a rash of graffiti which occurred late Friday night/early Saturday morning 4/3-4/4.
Numerous commercial buildings (Family Supermarket, former Jumpin J’s) and residences in the area just north of the Jefferson Avenue corridor in Union Hill were tagged.
The graffiti sucks, big time. It’s disturbing that participants of Slaugherama are being suspected of the crime.
