Church Hill Dog Park volunteer work party on 3/29
The Church Hill Dog Park has organized a volunteer workday for Sunday, March 29th from noon until whenever:
Many of our regular patrons have probably noticed the mud pit the dog park is rapidly becoming thanks to all the activity and recent monsoon. Have no fear, your CHDP committee is here! We are planning to begin the process of reseeding the park, thus preparing it for the spring and summer months; replacing a few boards; reinstalling gate hardware; painting the picnic tables as well as a few groundskeeping chores around the area.
If you would like to help us make the dog park sparkle again, please consider helping us on this day! Liquid refreshments will be on the premises in order to resupply your body with the electrolytes it will surely lose, : ).
To contact us with questions or to tell us you’re coming, email chimbodogs@hotmail.com or give us a call at 804/447-6205. We hope to see you there!
P.S. Beginning Sunday, March 29th, the dog park will be closed until Sunday, April 5th in order to allow the seed to take hold and picnic tables to dry. When it reopens, 1/3 of the large dog area will be sectioned off with bright orange snow fencing. We appreciate it if you would respect this.

since when do dogs not like a mud pit? maybe it is the owners. so make the dog run bigger with a mud pit to the side and add a dog wash and wash off your dog before going home.
Fantastic idea. Make sure you get some sturdy turf planted!
The city shuts down mud pits.
We’ll be using a combination of rye and bermuda grass ’cause they’re tough!
Thank you to all who were involved in the development of the park. Our dog loves it and so do we! Whenever we are there, we make an effort to pick up after the dogs as much as we can. However its a loosing battle; the park is beginning to look like the streets and tree wells all over Church Hill.
Maybe the spring cleanup and repair efforts will instill some pride and evoke some shame so that the dogs can have their park back.
FYI … there are several large piles of manure there now, so unless you have dogs who are uninterested in climbing and/or eating it, or you as an owner have a high tolerance to what your dog attempts to ingest, i would recommend avoiding the park altogether until April 5th.
Argggh!
Just a question…. would the city ever close the dog park down due to the large piles of manure?
While I’ve noticed piles of poop from time to time, I think the overflowing trashcans are nastier. It’s not so bad in the cooler months, but as the temperatures climb, so does the stench.
I would definitely recommend avoiding the dog park this week (and of course while it is closed through April 5) if your dog likes to eat things he/she is not supposed to. My dog was there last night and tried to eat from the fertilizer piles and is pretty sick today.
While we all know that the increased amount of manure seen throughout the park is a problem… there are simple solutions!
1. PICK UP AFTER YOUR OWN DOG
2. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE NOT DOING SO– POINT OUT TO THEM THAT THEY ‘MISSED’ SEEING THEIR DOG POOP, AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO PICK IT UP
3. if you feel so inclined, mosey through the park while your doggie plays and pick up some randoms;)
It’s everyone’s job to enforce the rules of the dog park, not just those people on the committee. Without the help from the community, it will become run-down, filthy and unenjoyable.
All this is even more reason to come out and help this weekend!!! Make your doggie’s play-pen a spot to truly enjoy!
(oh, and btw, the city has promised to pick up the trash more frequently… so hopefully we won’t be having the foul odor issues…)
Hope to see everyone this weekend!!!
Just wanted to let everyone know the large dog park is still closed. It will reopen once we get the snow fencing erected around the parts that have been reseeded.
