Richmond Marching Band practice today in Chimborazo Park (UPDATED)
03/29/2009 12:27 PM by John M
The first Richmond Marching Band rehearsal is today @3PM in Chimborazo Park. Open for anyone to join! Even if you don’t play an instrument, come & bring a shaker or a flag… OR START A DANCE LINE! [via]
Apparently someone called the cops. I guess Monroe Park gets all the good free music from now on.
So this is a whole different band from the United House of Prayer for All People Band? No fair, man! You guys up there already have a marching band! Where is our Reedy Creek Marching Band? Oh, well…I look forward to a rousing battle of the bands.
Is it in Monroe Park or Chimborazo?? This posting says Chimbo but the facebook page says Monroe..anyone know the scoop??
It’s Chimbo, I asked the same question & got confirmation.
We could use a bit of good natured rowdiness in Monroe Park. I’m sorry it’s 5:00 and I’m just reading this. I’ll have to catch up to them on Facebook and make the offer.
Anybody get some pics?
Our first rehearsal was a great time! So glad we could do it in Church Hill, even though it was our first and last time at Chimbo park. Photos and story up at RVAjazz:

Can anyone explain why the police were called? Let’s not let one sour-puss spoil the fun!!
Oh and – if you don’t want to live in a city with all of it’s noise and quirks – move back to the suburbs.
I can’t imagine why the cops would be called. I heard it on 36th street and loved it. The day was perfect and the sounds made it feel more like summer.
You sounded great until the buzz killers showed up. I hope you won’t give up on Chimbo. Maybe you can find out whose permission you need to make it your permanent rehearsal hall. Thanks for the tunes.
If you had only bothered to ask the parks and rec dept, I am sure they would have given you permission.
I need to say, as the one who spoke with the police, that they were as nice as can be…super super nice. Richmond Community Marching band hearts cops.
Matt, RPD is near and dear to my heart – so nice to hear good things about them. They probably wondered why they needed to end the fun at the park – they are good men and women!!
Hi,
I was one of the folks who called the police, and I must say the music would have been great. However, I work from home, and it was very, very hard to get anything done. We are not a University park, but a residential park. I know a great idea, the next time you try practicing in public, go to Libby park. I am certain they would have enjoyed your music.
There are folks who enjoy this sort of thing, but not everyone enjoys it. And there’s a noise ordinance on the books.
There were several of my neighbors who called the police.
I am certain the kids in the band are great kids, but none of them lived here. There will be a lot of “flack” about my opinion, but we live in America. And I am entitled to a certain amount of peace and quiet as my neighbors are as well. This part of church hill is very, very quiet 95 – 98% of the time. For the one who said the folks who called the police should move back to the suburbs,I’ve never lived in the suburbs. There was a time I lived in the fan for several years, and according to my friends this was a very quiet part of the city “without moving to the west end”. And it is, 95 – 98% of the time.
Y is it that just b/c some people don’t enjoy hearing this through their walls for hours are bad people?
Try Libby park next Sunday, and see how many of those folks call the police.
Thanks,
here’s some flack:
3 p.m. on a Sunday and you called the cops? for a marching band? i really like your version of america. i’m assuming you also were freaking out about the proposed “bike” festival in chimbo as well? so…you like the idea of a park, but not the actual park or the people that want to use it? you’re a theorist, an abstract thinker. i like that about you. i bet your kitchen is extremely clean, too. and your khakis well-pressed. i’m becoming attracted to you, i think. can we meet? i’m very discreet.
SSSSssssss!
“This part of church hill is very, very quiet 95 – 98%”
If you are going to live next to a park in the city, you are buying into your share of noise. Cities are noisy places and so are parks. 98% of the time and you aren’t satisfied? Criminy!
Chimborazo is a huge park while Libby in more of a pocket park, not the same thing.
The noise ordinance on the books refers to night time hours, does it not? And they only practiced for a few hours, not all day. I was working from home, too, on a paper due soon, and found the noise lovely.
Marching Band folks, contact me and I’ll get you in touch with the right people that will give you permission to practice in the park again. I know several of us welcome it as living this close to a great park others want to share comes with the territory.
@ Park – and what is your definition of a “residential” park?
#13 – first of all, What is the difference between a “University park” and a “residential park” ????
And secondly – do you also call the police every autumn for the Back to School Parade that also has LOTS of marching bands?
Third – why didn’t you just shut your windows?!
Crystal,
The noise ordinance applies 24 hours a day. I live straight across from the park, and the music was nice. However, Monroe park is a better place to practice. It’s a park in the middle of a University.
I am entitled to my right to enjoy my peace and quiet.
I am not sure where the folks live who are attacking me for calling the police, but just b/c you can concentrate on a paper. It’s short minded of you to assume we all have the same level of concentration. I had to prepare a presentation for a proposed business deal the next day. It’s my living, not a paper, and as you age you’ll better understand.
I own several properties in church hill, and this is the most quiet part of church hill.
It was the reason “I LEFT THE VCU AREA” neighborhood.
And for the one who asked do I call the police when the marching band comes for the new school year, no I don’t. It’s a very advertised and planned event. We all know it’s coming, and y are you complaining to me so much. They played for almost two hours. How long do they need to practice right in the middle of the park.
There’s an area near the dog park with picnic tables etc.
They could have gone down there and played.
The one who mentioned my reference to Libby park. The only reason they didn’t go to Libby park is b/c they knew the police would have been called immediately.
There are other small parks in the fan, and there’s Jefferson park up here.
As I stated, I knew I would be attacked b/c my opinion went against the “me” generation.
#13 my windows were shut, all of them. However, it very hard to get away from those very large drums when you live straigt across from the park.
The ordinance law says, we as citizens are entitled to peace and quiet within our own four walls.
I expect to sit on my front porch in warm weather and hear children play, and see people walking etc. but not hear them through my walls and closed windows.
Thanks,
hey Park, i think that you were attacked, likely because you are an asshole. if you own the park the cut the grass and save the taxpayers/public some money
Ear Plugs? How about walking down and chatting with the band?
