Books on Wheels is seeking space in Church Hill
Local literacy/cycling heroes Books on Wheels are looking for a space in Church Hill:
Books on Wheels is actively looking for a space to rent (or to have donated to us for use) to open a Community Center where we can take our mobile operation and make it a little more grounded.
These are the perks of this in no particular order:
1. We can take more donations and store them.
2. We will have room to become more organized with our books and bicycle parts.
3. We will offer a free bookstore!
4. We will offer free classes on bicycle maintenance and repair!
5. This could be a tax-write off for someone who donates us space.
6. We can now take people up on their offers to VOLUNTEER in a space.
7. I will have something to do with my free time this summer (big plus).SO, if anyone has any connects in the Church Hill area, that is where we would like to be. No need for bus parking at a space, but a garage is ideals.
Contact Shelley at booksonwheelsva@yahoo.com if you’ve got any leads on a good space.
I don’t know about this group, but it sounds like a good fit for the Robinson Theater? Right? Storage may be an issue there, but I’m not sure. Another option (although possibly more difficult) would be the famed Church Hill Market space. There’s also the Corn Stove store space that’s just been finished on the 600 block of 25th Street. Keith West has some property on Broad Street that he’s been trying to sell with little luck. Maybe he’d offer that space for the tax right off? Finally, Dillard Tupponce owns the former Jumping Je’s Java that is not currently being used. I’m not sure what the condition of that space is either, but I’m just throwing out ideas here. I hope these are some good leads.
I also don’t know anything about Books on Wheels but I would suggest contacting Mt Carmel Baptist Church. They are located on the corner of N 32nd and Broad. They do a lot of community service and they seem to have a lot of room. There is a good deal of diverse foot traffic through this area with Chimbo Park at one end of the block and the Blue Wheeler at the other end.
Oooh, there’s also that cool building at the triangle of Jefferson/Marshall on 21st that used to be a garden shop … it was For Rent forever, and nothing seems to be going on there … it has great big windows and a large parking lot.
I know it will probably never happen, but HOW ABOUT THE SUNNY MARKET!?!?!?!?!
There’s also Church Hill Herb shop, as well as the old theater next to the post office (lots of space, needs a little work).
The theater next to the post office has no roof – that’s more than a little work.
One of the laundromats on the corner of 27th and marshall?
