This Old House names Church Hill among “Best Places to Buy an Old House”
06/23/2009 11:31 AM by John M
In a wonderful follow-up to yesterday’s dubious recognition, This Old House has named Church Hill on their list of Best Places to Buy an Old House 2009:
Nestled in downtown Richmond, Virginia, the brick sidewalks of Church Hill are lined with gas street lamps and rows of late-19th-century Italianates and Queen Anne Victorians with wrought-iron porches. This place is truly alive with history [..]. But the past isn’t all there is to Church Hill, which was seeing a redevelopment boom right before the recession hit. Walk south toward Libby Hill Parkâ€â€and the James River that it overlooksâ€â€and you’ll find the entertainment and cafe hotspots of Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Slip.
Perfect find and perfect timing John!
Does anyone recognize the house that This Old House offers as an example of the neighborhood. I think it is a stock photo and not actually in the neighborhood.
Brad #2, no I don’t recognize it but it shouldn’t be hard to figure out where it is, provided it’s really in the neighborhood, since the house number clearly shows up as 323. That would put it on a north/south street between Broad and Marshall, if in fact it’s here at all.

That house is actually a house in Petersburg – Folly Castle – at 323 W. Washington St. What a shame they couldn’t have actually come to Church Hill to take a real picture of us!
The article continued, “We hope to give Church Hill an even higher rating next year. This is, of course, dependent on whether or not residents can find a way to escape the mortal perils associated with living in one of the country’s most dangerous neighborhoods.”
yea! (what’s This Old House though?)
Boy, things sure have changes since this post from June 2009. Now you can’t give houses away here and people pulling out due to the crime issue coming back in.
Eric Huffstutler… wow. Been reading your posts for weeks… now I’m compelled to ask… Do you EVER have anything good to say?!
