An Afternoon with Eliza Poe

Sun Jul 5 2:00 pm
St. John’s Church’s cemetery is the final resting place of Elizabeth Arnold Poe, Edgar Allan Poe’s birth mother and an accomplished stage actress in her day. Eliza was known for her theatrical versatility, her comedic skill, and her beautiful singing voice. She was twenty-four when she passed away in Richmond in 1811, and at the time of her death she was on her way to achieving national stardom.

Meet Eliza Poe for a stroll through the grounds of St. John’s Church. Learn about what life in Richmond was like in the early nineteenth century, and hear Mrs. Poe tell her tragically short life story. In addition to two monologues from her vast repertoire, Mrs. Poe will also perform “The Market Lass,” with which she debuted on the American stage in 1796 at the age of nine.

Ticket prices: $6.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors, $4.00 for children ages 7-18, and children under seven are admitted free. Please call 804.648.5015 or email programs@saintjohns.cc for more information.
