Delivery man shot to death on Whitcomb Street
07/28/2009 6:37 AM by John M
Just before midnight last night, Richmond Police were called to the 2200 block of Whitcomb Street for a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, they found an as-yet-unidentified Asian male who had been shot to death, who cbs6 is reporting was a food delivery man.
Right now investigators are in the early stages of this investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available.
Anyone with any information about this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
There are businesses that actually
deliver food to Whitcomb at night?
not anymore…
This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. Unacceptable! Not my sweet lil asian delivery men. When will this madness stop!?!
i really don’t understand why everyone is making a joke out of this. a man was shot– doesn’t that mean anything to you people!?
i only hope you recieve just as much sympathy if ever something terrible happens to you!
Grow up people- learn some sympathy for your fellow man
This person had family, had friends and had co-workers. And, it seems, he was actually trying to make a living. It is really senseless when anyone gets killed – and to make light of it is pathetic. I guess it would have caused outrage had he been Murdered in the ‘safe’ zone, whatever that is these days. Thanks (insert post number here) for your sympathy.
@ 6 & 7: Who was dissing the victim??? I don’t see a post that makes a “joke out of this…”
I really hope these comments weren’t directed at me, because I was being totally serious. I live a few blocks from the restaurant, have formed friendships with the delivery men, and was in tears when I wrote my previous comment.
#8- ummm… posts #2 and #5 were oozing with sarcasm… and steph, apparently you didn’t intend for it to come off that way, but to the outside reader, it did. i’ve never heard anyone shout out ‘stop the madness’ unless they were poking fun at something. If you were serious, i am truly sorry for the loss of your friend.
Didn’t perceive #5 as joking, for what it’s worth. Stuff like this is total madness, for sure. I appreciate the perspective of people who are not all crusty and grizzled and used to it.
It’s not like this everywhere. The violence in this town is a gigantic problem for everyone.
It is worth pointing out that through July 30, there have been 7 incidents of murder in the East End this year. Last year at this time there had been 10, though there were but two more through the end of the year.
RE #12 – Point taken. I love this neighborhood, too, and it’s good that stats show that murders are down by a couple-few ticks. I maintain that the fact that the improvement still breaks down to one killing a month, in a relatively small geographic area, warrants continued community focus and concern.
When I lived on 27th between Leigh and M, I had some friends visiting from NYC and they were blown away by the fact that we couldn’t get a pizza after dark. Totally freaked them out.
We may be kind of accustomed, but by outside comparison the problem is still noteworthy. And seeking further improvement does not negate the strides that have been made. That’s all I’m sayin.
Excuse me, not to detract from the tragedy that is being discussed on this posting, but can someone please clarify the comment Shannon made @13:
“When I lived on 27th between Leigh and M, I had some friends visiting from NYC and they were blown away by the fact that we couldn’t get a pizza after dark.”
That freaks me out! Is this true? Currently looking at houses in the neighborhood, and I gotta say I am not really interested in buying someplace where I can’t get Tarrant’s or Papa John’s right up ’till closing time. If they are not willing to be on the street why would I? Is this true for everywhere north of Broad St.?
Interested- Bottoms Up has places they will & won’t go north of Broad, though they deliver further now than they did a few years ago. I don’t know their boundaries. Terrants just recently started to deliver up here I think. I don’t think they have “boundaries.” No idea about Papa Johns. Also, Assanti’s and Valentino’s deliver up here. Again, not sure what their area of delivery is. All of those places come to the area around Jefferson Park.
What a tragedy that this delivery man was killed. Sad and shocking. I cannot view the above videos. Was robbery the motive? What restaurant was he delivering for?
Times Dispatch has a follow-up story, a Chinese American cultural group is raising money to help his family with expenses.

He was delivering for Wan Jing Lou which is in the 1800 block of Creighton Road.
#14, pizza delivery is much better than it used to be. When I lived on Franklin Street, back in the 80s and 90s, at one point I could get delivery from Domino’s and Bottoms Up and that was it. It’s improving. I didn’t know Valentino’s delivered, thanks Kristin #15 for pointing that out.
I’m glad to see that people are taking his senseless death seriously. I’m sure he had family who loved him that he was working hard to support.
In one of the news clips that I saw regarding his shooting and death a Whitcomb resident said that this was an “inconvenience to the community” because they will probably not deliver late night there again.
Maybe there’s something more important here than whether you can get pizza delivered.
So, as of today the victim is still not identified…wasn’t even an employee but a helping friend, according to RTD. John, any word on ‘suspects’ in this?
that’s a damn shame. all of the folks who’ve delivered to me from wjl have always been very nice folks. more often than not as of late they seem like younger guys. i hope they catch the asshole who did this.
As a former delivery driver myself, I don’t think any restaurants should deliver to public housing. I know public housing projects are filled with MOSTLY good people, but they (or at least, the ones in Richmond) have histories filled with far too much crime…something bad is going to happen eventually.
I find it sad that this happened! It’s already bad enough that those of us who are good folks can’t even enjoy the leisure of calling our local restaurants and having things delivered. They stopped delivering pizza (which was the last option left) to 35th street about 5 years ago so chinese was the only hope we had for delivery. However what we ALL MUST REMEMBER is that housing project doesnt equal bad people, one or two bad apples always spoils a bunch. I get so annoyed when I tell people I live in Church Hill and they give me the wow really or the you don’t sound like you would live in Church Hill comment. How Dumb! My prayers go out to the victims family and friends and I hope they catch the idiot or idiots that did this.
Whoever the pussy is who robs a delivery guy, is gonna get his. Karma’s a B*tch.
I was afraid it was a Wan Jing Lou person. I agree with Some Guy– the guys that deliver from there are always incredibly nice. They’re young & I always guessed might be students. I’m so sad this happened. What senseless crime on a completely innocent person.
My sincere condolences to the family and friends of this young man. It’s a sad day in Richmond when anyone is murdered; but it’s especially sad when the victim is simply making a living and robbed. The maddening part is that someone out there knows who did this, but are too afraid of the retaliation on themselves and their family to speak out. The fear these punks relay in the neighborhood is real. I wish more people had the courage to speak out; as that is the only way to hinder these senseless crimes.
