Three candidates so far for 7th District seat
07/28/2009 4:52 PM by John M
With just about 3 weeks left to go, word via the city registrar has only Ronald Bond and Clarence Kenney having filed in the race for the City Council 7th District seat. The election page at the Virginia Public Access Project also puts Cynthia Newbille on the ballot for the November 3rd special election to fill the seat vacated by Delores McQuinn after her election to the House of Delegates in January.
The filing deadline for this office is August 21. The Richmond Crusade for Voters has 7th District City Council Candidates Forum on their calendar for August 18.
Can anyone give a thum-nail summary of these candidates and their qualifictions or backgrounds to run/or not run for City Council and represent 7th Dist. It is nice to have three candidates but are any capable/qualified to be our rep, speak for the people, do the work and contend with some of the “Others” on City Council?
Mr.Bond made quite an impression at last year’s forum of schoolboard candidates. He is quite possibly the most awkward public speaker that I have ever seen.
I remember ….thus in effect, we are down to two.

Whole lotta talk a few months back when everyone complained that Newbille would be Henry Marsh’s latest “chosen” candidate.
Now? Not a peep!
What gives?
Has everyone just come to the conclusion that whatever Marsh want, Marsh gets?
ray #4, well, it’s sort of like that. I’ve personally worked on three serious campaigns to unseat one or another of Marsh’s selections, none of which succeeded. Plus, it takes money to make it work, and serious organization, and even then you’ve got to have a plan. Otherwise, Marsh organizes his folks, and that’s where the votes go.
I’m still pissed about Newbille, but, unless someone really strong steps up soon, well spoken, with money and strong support in the precincts which actually vote the most, it looks like she’ll get it. Doesn’t mean she doesn’t have to campaign, she does, but she’ll have the most money and the support of the Marsh Machine.
I think there are a lot of people who are so used to the 7th being under represented, or under the rule of Marsh and his appointees, they are just not going to bother to vote. Me, I’ll vote for anyone except Newbille, but I’m just one vote. I actually saw Henry Marsh in the Market down on Main the other day, he looked old and tired, too bad he doesn’t realize it’s time to let go. Same as Jesse Jackson during the Obama campaign, these guys were something in their day but they need to let go and let new folks get in.
I nominate John Murden to run for the 7th district seat! John? Would you please consider representing our district in City Council – we need someone with integrity who will represent the 7th district citizens needs instead of blindly following the “political machine” that has run this place while taking into consideration their own personal and political interests that don’t typically benefit most of the people they were elected to represent.
