What’s a good termite service?

Last time out we sourced the hive mind for good house painters. Next up: what’s a good service for termite killin’ and prevention?
Loyal Termite & Pest Control is wonderful. We have been using their services for 5 years.

Yeah Loyal is the best, 737-7777,to treat but to prevent keep your crawl space dry and you should be fine.
When you are choosing one, keep in mind the following info so you know what you’re getting. There are two basic types of treatment spraying or injection. Spraying is cheaper, takes care of the immediate problem, but is a temporary solution and may not kill the colony which may start nibbling the wood that is not being hit by the spray. The alternative is to drill holes around the perimeter either inside or outside of the house and inject a solution directly into the ground. It’s labor intensive, especially if you’re going through concrete, but it’s supposed to kill all termites within 90 days and be effective for 10 years. Not everyone offers both and most of them will try and get you to do a service or maintenance contract for periodic inspections.
Funny you should ask…b/c I spent the morning with Leon of Loyal on a “return visit” for a termite kill.
The original treatment wasn’t cheap: about $1100.00 to drill thru my brick foundation, and concrete back porch pad using Thermador as the insecticide…Nov. of ’07.
The little buggers came back about a month ago, and fortunately, I’d signed up for the annual $ contract that protects me should termites return (costs about 10% of the big money you pay upfront).
Today, Leon found what might be the miniscule water source for the infested area: a crack under my 2nd floor, west facing window frame…wind driven rain probably got in to made for some good eatin’. Got the caulk gun out pronto.
Royal Pest Control 276-8300 359-2300
Mr. Benedict is a nice guy and his prices are reasonable. He comes back and inspects and treats every year. My house on Princess Anne was totally infested with termites when I bought it- several major support beams and related heart of pine floors had to be replaced–they apparently ate well for years. No problems since I got the Royal treatment.
I know that neighbors on Princess Anne have also had major issues with the pests– a former neighbor said the varmits ate her china cabinet from the inside out. Feel free to mention my name when you call.
I’ve used Dodson. I have an attached house and some places wouldn’t even treat my home, others were much more expensive and wouldn’t warranty anything unless the other half of the house also did a treatment.
I second the recommendation for Dodson. I have used them for five years and have never had a single problem. They’re also fantastic for monthly pest control (black ants!). Plus the price is quite reasonable–after the initial treatment annual maintenance is less than $100.
We’ve been very satisfied with Richmond Pest Control. They were clear about what we needed to do and what we didn’t need to do, and they got results.
