Garden spots available at Chimborazo Park Playground
09/02/2009 6:40 AM by John M
Garden beds at the new Chimborazo Park Playground are available for leasing and going fast:
The beds are approximately 100 square feet, and are raised beds of about 16″ deep. They will be built along with the playground on build day, Sept. 10th, including a compost/soil mix that is ready for planting. It is a $50 fee for a year’s lease. People can email if they are interested: chimbo@tricyclegardens.org or call (804)231-7767.
I’d like to do this, but what can I plant in September? To my thinking this is like paying a yearly lease for 7 months.
I say this at the risk of sounding ugly but I am really asking…what is the value of paying for it now?
@katzen – You can plant radishes, turnips, leaf lettuce, broccoli, and more. Here is just the first site I came across http://www.humeseeds.com/falwint.htm
and garlic and leeks and cabbage and collards and cauliflower and swiss chard…Southern States on Williamsburg Road has fall/winter plants available now.
I’m getting ready to plant beets, spinach, brussels sprouts, kale, lettuce, carrots and radishes. There are a LOT of veggies that can be planted this time of year and harvested in winter even! Google “cole” and “cold” crops.
Thanks I appreciate the info!
The $50 will extend thru 2010. and yes, there are lots of veggies that can go in for winter and fall!
also a good time of year to break ground and add amendments, then let the freeze do it’s work over the winter. Something about soil structure. I’m sure someone with more recent gardening experience could explain better, but it is what I recall.
