Something Like a Deli opens next week

A reader writes in with news of a new place to get something to eat:
The store behind what was to be the market at 29th and Broad is opening on the 21st. It will be called ‘Something Like a Deli’. One of the owners managed Croaker’s Spot in Jackson Ward and is a consultant for the soon to be opening Croaker’s on Hull St.
glad to hear. We used to go to whatever it was called before some. Heard she had landlord troubles… too bad, nice lady.
Something else around is a plus
Fantastic news! Best wishes and a warm welcome to our new business neighbor.
If they offer anything as tasty as Croaker’s Spot does we’re in for a treat.
as long as it doesn’t SMELL like Croaker’s Spot we will be in for a treat
Are you kidding? Croaker’s both tastes and smells AWESOME!
I can’t wait! I did not like the place that was in this spot before, but Something like a Deli sounds much more promising.
Welcome to the neighborhood!
The’ve changed their opening date to Tuesday the 22nd. They will have fabulous meat loaf too, etc!
We went to this place last evening and got a menu. I went back again today to get lunch for a our work crew at 5 minutes past noon. The man working there was outside hanging out with a few men, door to the resturant open. I asked about the menu and he said we aren’t open yet. I said oh I thought my husband talked with you last night and you were open. He said yes we’re open, but today we won’t open for another half of an hour. Who opens for lunch at 12:30? Hmmmmm, do I want to go back, do I think they’ll make it? So much for trying to help this new business take off…I went to the Alamo instead and fed the entire work crew delicious b-b-q, was treated like a valued customer.
As luck would have it on the day of the previous post the owner had a commitment that was made months before opening the deli resulting in a late opening on that day. Please give them another chance.
With all due respect for the opinion of post # 9 , I just had to respond . I’m saddened that the poster had a subpar experience with SLAD , but the fact is the BBQ at Alamo is far less than stellar . The sides are even less so . Please give Moody and crew another chance and I think you won’t be disappointed . We found the portions to be generous and the food delicious . It may well be that we hit Alamo on a bad day and I am glad to see them thrive on the Hill , but there is truly no comparison .
#11 CityKitty – then is Ted Moody one of the people behind this? If so, yay, that’s great!
I think the poster in #9 was more referring to the customer service rather than the food. If there was a conflict that delayed the opening that day, could no one have explained that to the customer? I like the food at Alamo too and am willing to try this new place however, many times it’s customer service and first impressions that bring people back.
#12/crd: Yes, it’s Ted, and this is a great addition to the neighborhood!
So anyone know what happened to the Deli? It has been closed for at least a week.
None of these places have much of a life expectancy…
It was closed prior to Christmas with a sign stating it would re-open in early January. That sign has since been removed.
The place wasn’t doing very well. There would be several hours at a time that no customers would come in. The menu was probably the biggest issue. If “Something Like a Deli” was actually a Deli…it would have done better. The offerings just needed to have more of a universal appeal.
Does anyone know what the current plans for the building are? Is the owner looking for new tenants? Or, does anyone have contact information for the owner? “Something Like a Deli” is definitely not reopening? Thanks to anyone who has this info!
It appears to be closed for good. There is a “For Rent” sign in the window.
